I just read the New Your Times article provided. All I can say here, without getting poofed, is I Am Repulsed that what this man is doing is even legal.

In her never-ending quest to get me a medication that will help my lower back pain, my doctor recently prescribed Lido Caine for me. It came in 3 little jars, each being about 2" in diameter and about 1" high, not large. I nearly died when I looked at the invoice and see it cost my insurance company $890. (I paid $30)
The drug is basically ineffective. My OTC $22 Voltaren Emugel I get from Canada is more effective.

My child takes a drug that costs $3000 for 5 days of medication and is not covered by insurance. Up until a year or so ago, it was available at any pharmacy and was covered with a co-pay. The company was bought out and the new owner decided to make it a boutique drug meaning you can only purchase it via the manufacturer and no where else. Perfectly legal. The drug is highly toxic and can only be used a few times a year but yes, it's $3000 each time.
Because I have a child with a chronic illness and therefore travel to different hospitals in the US seeing specialists, I wind up talking with family members who are also with their loved ones receiving treatments for numerous medical issues. One thing we all agree on (and I know many here will say NO NO NO) is that medicine (treatment and drugs) is a HUGE money maker for the US and why on earth would any doctor, hospital or pharmaceutical company want to give up that cash cow? We believe there are many cures out there that are not given to the public simply due to greed. Many in med school have no desire to do anything except specialize in order to work short hours and make the most money (don't get met started on the nightmare that finding a Neurologist has become). It's all about money people, ALL about money.

Kachina, you bring up another important point. This kind of price increase will have a real impact on the cost of healthcare. The hospitals will have to pass the cost along. And this drug isn't the only one where the cost is inflated.

I am so sorry you have to go through all of that and pay so much to take care of your child.

I feel the same way!!! It makes me wonder what's next?!!! Does this open doors for more of this kind of behavior? It sickens me....making a huge profit off of the backs of the sick who usually don't have a lot of disposable income. DISGUSTING!!
