I highly suspect that the scale does not weigh accurately to the ounce. If it is so consistently happening, I think the scale would have to be examined.

There are more important things for me to get bent out of shape over other than being "shorted" one ounce of meat.

Re: Less meat in package than stated on label

Some of the comments are amusing since the "foot long Subway" shortage of 1 inch lawsuit was supported by so many here.

So if the OP took it upon herself to weigh hamburger - it's her time to spend as she sees fit.

I don't know if weighing the meat is worth the time and effort but I doubt it can ever be proven.

Who is to say a consumer doesn't remove a bit of the product and then claim they were shorted??  (Not saying the OP does this.)

The 11 inch Subway bread was easy.  Proving an ounce of meat is missing would be harder.

Re: Less meat in package than stated on label

@caroln24, I don't think its right either. If I pay for a pound, I want to get a pound of whatever it is.

I quit buying beef at the store. I started getting it from a farmer a few towns over who raises and butchers his own been. It is so much better and if you buy in bulk it's cheaper. I don't know if everywhere is like that or not, but I would suggest seeing if there is a local farmer close by. The beef tastes a lot better too.

Kind of like organic milk tastes so much better.

This is off topic, but I ordered diet cokes from Wal Mart today. They are now over 9 bucks for a 24 pack. I swear just a few weeks ago, they were less than 8. CRAZY.

And I really don't think a whole 1.25 ounce of "fluid" leaked into the tray pad.

but it would still weigh something?   if you complained to the dept of argriculture then they must be allowed to include the tare weight in the net weight

You should be getting what you pay for, whether it is 1/2 ounce or ten ounces.

@caroln242,  I don't know if this is true in every state but discussing this with a knowledgeable friend I was told that in her location the meat/produce scales are not checked for accuracy so if in doubt have the meat package weighed at the checkout since those scales are inspected and certified.

[ Edited ]

I never buy pre-packaged meat. I buy when something is on sale at the full service meat counter. They weigh it in front of me.

Re-weighing everything seems a little OCD to me, IMO.  My time is too valuable to spend weighing and calling regulators.

@caroln242 @I think you're on to something. I think consumers are not getting what they paid for and no one is complaining because no one has been checking. They also inject meat and poultry with liquids which jack up the weight. Does the USDA regulate this? Do they care? Is there another agency that regulates this? You might want to contact news agencies if you want to being this into the public eye. Thank you for letting me know about this.

Thank you for providing these links.  One of these links was talking about "wet tare" and "dry tare", the same thing the man from the Dept. of Ag was explaining to me about.  Another thing spoken of was "the stated weight must be within an approved range".  One ounce?  Two ounces?  They don't say.  They make it so complicated, the average consumer will just throw up their hands and say, to heck with it.  Sounds like a "loop hole" the stores are taking advantage of.

And I agree with you that they are getting away with it because no one is checking. I don't think it's a waste of time to check that I'm getting what I pay for.  It only takes me about 15 seconds to place a pound of hamburger on the scale and check the weight.  I did it the first time just out of curiosity and now just check every now and then to see if the shortage has continued. It has.

Man plans. God laughs.
