I always ask myself, if a bank or credit union won't loan a person money, why should I?

I don't know...I didn't ask.  i just said no.

What? If someone asked me out for money I'd expect them to tell me or I'd ask why. I understand why you don't want to lend it but it doesn't cost a dime to listen & if it's an emergency offer ideas to help him find the needed money.

Why should this now become @Carmie 's issue?  Just because someone calls her out of the blue needing money doesn't mean she should feel any obligation to take on finding a solution to his problems.  She handled it perfectly!

@kitcat51 @Carmie No, I wouldn't ask why because I am going to say NO.

Well, if it's an emergency I hope it all works out for him.

I sincerely hope your husband supports your answer and doesn't go behind your back on this.

@Carmie, You did good!  I am glad your DH did the same thing.  And it’s a good thing you didn’t ask what the money was needed for.  It would have been the opportunity for a very creative answer.

@Carmie You are 100% right not to trust this guy.

Could be he's hit up everyone else and got turned down. Likely couldn't get a bank loan either.

I can't stand people like that, used to know one. Only heard from her when she "needed" something (no emergency). After we told her "sorry, can't do it" often enough, she went away.

If this guy called you, he probably has run through all of his friends and they all told him no.  He has now moved on to acquantances and is hoping for the best.

No way would I give an acquantance that kind of money.
