I would loan her a dress...not one I cherish....but a nice dress.
She probably was embarassed to need to ask if you had worked together and she is now in need.
I would not want to say "no!" That could be a kick when she is already down and had to use any money she had to get to go to the wedding.
Things, bad things, just happen sometimes and you have no control over it.
My Granddaughter just got ousted from a good job, after winning an award for being one of "THE BEST."
The company fired the top 3 salary makers to hire cheaper ones!

Is life so black & white?
With things like this - yes! They're just clothes. Helping people matters.

Interesting. For me I would say come on over and let's check it out. I don't have many things a person could wear to a wedding but I have a thing or two.
I guess I can remember how tough life can be sometimes and now and then it is nice to give someone a hand. Kindness goes a long way at times.
You could even offer to go to 2nd hand places with her if she needed something to go with something you had or didn't have.
I guess I don't know anyone who doesn't have something they could give to someone else in need.
Why be so selfish is my question to some?

If I had something I no longer was going to wear I would give it to her. My question is how would you know what is appropriate for her to wear? I feel this is a strange request from someone you really do not know that well. Did she explain the type of dress she needed? Did she try resale or thrift stores?

Just encouraging this behaviour. Not greedy or selfish but I can smell bad, looser behaviour.

Further thought--since her son is paying for her to attend the wedding, maybe she could ask him for some money so she could buy herself an outfit.
Still think it's a strange request from someone you don't know well. And it has nothing to do with being "generous or stingy."

Yes, it does.
Maybe her son is already using all the money he has for the plane ticket so she doesn't want to ask for more.

@ahoymate So someone asks to borrow a dress and you "smell bad, looser behavior" What a cruel thing to say. It is heartwarming to see that the majority of posters to this thread do not feel this way.
