Learned something new today

[ Edited ]

1#vamp.gifTired of thawing out my chest freezer, so, was researching frost free chest freezers. Called couple of places and they said don't exist !

Didn't know if you wanted frost free freezers you had to buy an upright

no choice. Now, I'll have to rethink my area and if I can adapt to an upright. Want a 10 cu. ft size.

@SharkE

I went from chest freezer to upright deep freeze.  I love it!

I had to chip ice out of the chest freezer.  I've never had to do it in the upright.

@SharkEyes Frigidaire Frost Free

I don't know how old it is.  Mom gave it to us after Dad passed away.

My upright freezer is frost free. I wouldn't buy otherwise.

I also went from a chest freezer to an upright.  Mine is a GE.   Best thing I ever bought.  Hated defrosting the chest freezer.   Also, items would be at the bottom and I would forget what was in the freezer.   Mine has glass shelves, plus two drawers.  It is nice to open the freezer and see everything and not have to search for items.

I have a 20 plus year old upright freezer we have to defrost every couple of years....next one will be frost free.

Only negative with frost free is that freezer food gets a bad flavor/freezer taste to it over time.

Re: Learned something new today

Funny but true story about upright frost free freezers. My parents bought one back in 1964 and filled it with all sorts of items. One of the items was Banquet Frozen Individual Cherry Pies. Some got pushed to the back and forgotten. When they found them(many,many months later) and cooked them, the middle was totally void of any liquid. It had all dried out by the defrosting and refreezing.  They learned to pay attention as to what and when something was put in there.

Re: Learned something new today

I’m not sure why you think you have to adapt to an upright freezer; it’s just like opening up your refrigerator and taking out what you need, based on where you put it.  Everything is right in front of you, no deep bending or extended reaching involved.

I put beef on the top shelf, pork on the second shelf.   Third shelf has a few packages of frozen chicken, along with frozen hash browns, fries, and loaves of bread.   Other boxes of frozen foods are on the bottom.

I hated when mom sent me to the basement to find something in the big chest freezer.   The only easy finds were bread and vegetables.   I have never owned a chest freezer, nor intend to at this point in my life.
