The name was "smeared" because of Lance's past actions.

You don't "protect" your family by:

a. driving drunk

b. lying about drug use (including alcohol)

c. lying to the police

d. blaming the media for exposing your own stupidity

e. thinking that just because it was Anna driving it wouldn't hit the news

Seriously - those teenagers certainly don't have exemplary role models - seems they need protection more from Anna and Lance than they do from public scrutiny.

If he would've told the truth, the general public would've thought, "yeah...kinda figures...he's life is spiraling out of control". It still would've been a story, but more of a "meh" story. But a psychopath will always be a psychopath.
