i am not aware that Gelson's stores have any self check-outs. mine does not.   G's is all about service - they open a new register if more than 2 in line.  according to the article she simply pushed her cart out the door - rather than through the check-out lane.

that right there tells me she has some kind of mental health problems. No one who has all their faculties would simply push a cart out the door as if it was the normal thing to do. Undiagnosed early dementia for example can start out with doing things out of the ordinary and can go overooked by friends and family as an old age forgetfulness kind of thing.

I think there will be more to this down the road then a successful woman stealing some food.

Whatever her reasoning was for shoplifting who really knows. It is sad when you hear that a great star with all her fame this had to happen. Who knows at her age what was she thinking or maybe she has medical issues. I am sure it is very embarrassing to her.

I just checked it out & according to the article I read she only has a net worth of $500 thousand dollars .... not that much in today’s day & age ... I hope it all works out for her.

It’s sad when anyone does this, for whatever reason. She’s pushing close to 80 years old. She may be property-poor and not have sufficient monthly income. She may be getting senile. She may have a mental disorder that causes this. Whatever it is, now that it’s become so public something will have to be done about it.

The fact that the store has watched her do it before, in the same manner, and has store surveillance tape (they say) to back that up, certainly does sound like she has a compulsion to do this. But it could also be a dementia with fear of being penniless. We’ll probably never know what the truth is.

Sounds like she's a repeat offender and many people fall on hard times and they don't steal and people with dementia don't necessarily shoplift.  However, many famous people do shop lift for whatever reason....usually a family member will cover it or an attorney and sometimes shopkeepers may look the other way due to the person's notoriety.  This time it sounds like they are fed up.   I don't think she should get a pass, just pay for what you steal!  And, if the store wishes to press charges, they should just like with any other person.  She doesn't get to break the law because she's Lanie Kazan and that's the best treatment.

This is sad, I wonder if she is down on her luck, or made bad investments with her earnings? Not saying this is true for her, but some people like the thrill of shoplifting, someone who can well afford a drugstore lipstick steals it instead of purchasing it.

Wel it is certainly enough that she doesn't need to steal to eat.

This is heartbreaking news ~ too bad it had to be publicized to add to her distress. I hope that since actual charges have been pressed, she will get some help with whatever has gone so wrong with her health or life.

I also think she's suffering from early dimentia. I'm sure she could afford to pay -- and if she couldn't, she wouldn't be shopping at Gelsons. I also remember her from the past. so sad.
