I found several dogwood trees growing in the woods today. I wanted to be sure and post its blooms because soon, they will be gone.
I remember hearing the legend of the dogwood tree. It was said that this tree used to grow very large and strong, like a Great Oak Tree. Because of this, its wood was used for a variety of purposes.
According to the legend, it was the dogwood that provided the wood in which Jesus was crucified.
There's more to this story, I've included in a poem I found below. Whether you believe in this or not, it's hard not to find the tree and flowers to be lovely and the legend fascinating.

According to Google, the berries are edible. They are considered an antioxident.

@cheriere That is fascinating, I had never heard that before, about the Dogwood. The poem is very poignant.
Dogwood blossoms are lovely and bloom in June, in the Northeast. We see flowers in pink or white, so beautiful.
At this time, the pink Magnolia trees are blossoming.

I'm really happy you liked hearing about it. I remembered hearing about this when I was young. Then, it was discussed during a World Civ class I had way back in college.😃
The dogwoods bloomed early here because of all the very warm weather. I wasn't sure how much longer they'd last after seeing the flowers.🌸
I love ❤️ magnolia trees too. That's one tree I sure would love to have here.

I do remember that legend but I don't remember ever seeing the poem.
My grandmother had a pretty pink and a white dogwood in her back yard

@cheriere Thanks! I never heard that legend before. It reminds me of the legend of the cross appearing on the back of the donkey. I think the dogwoods are going to be a bit early this year here in southeast PA. They usually bloom around Mother's Day.

I just love these trees. I've never had a pink one! They're sure beautiful though.💝
I was shocked to find so many out in the woods. Many years ago, someone who used to own this property must've planted them.
