The words of her song were "Until it happens to you".   I don't think I can know how it feels to be sexually abused. I was one of the lucky ones. But, I felt her pain and the pain of all the survivors standing with her. I cannot and will not dismiss the song, the performance or the responsibility I have to change what is happening to young women and men. All of us need to stand together to expose the societal problem and make sure the suffering ends.

It's not the Oscars if a Bond song doesn't win. Those movies are mostly the same (bad guys get killed in their exotic lair, good guy saves the world and the girl, again).

I'm glad the song got a nomination as its topic needs to be brought out into the open. Too many colleges and universities try to sweep this under the rug (this doesn't happen at OUR school!) when it does all the time.

The song has people talking and maybe that was the intent (having a dialogue for reform).

I just heard a very sad statistic this morning .....  that only about 13% of college rapes are ever reported.

On the other hand, a rape occurring anywhere most likely will never be reported.   This has to change.

I've spoken with two of my college aged nieces and nephews about this. They both have been involved with a group which is looking into this issue and putting together a report about it.

Colleges have their own security force that patrols and oversees their college campuses. Evidently there is a complex web of confusion that results from this when prosecuting rapes that occur with their college students.

At a very basic level, because of the way the College systems are set up, the Colleges make it very difficult for the rape victims to get justice. -- Colleges are very powerful institutions and generally feel it is in their best interests to make these "problems" go away because it creates bad public relations for them.

I loved the performance.  I thought it was brilliant and heartfelt.

But as to who would win the Academy Award, I think that's a less emotionally-charged deal.

Her song was lovely, although not many lyrics, and I truly loved it.

Unfortunately, I am one who understands so it was hard to feel but beautiful to hear.   I know others here also have this level of understanding for the subject matter, unfortunately.   My heart breaks for everybody because it's a club that nobody wants to join and, unfortunately, it's a kind of trauma that changes who you become, especially for those of us who experienced it from the time we were small children.  But it's no less painful for ANYBODY who has to have had this become a part of who they are.  Heart

But the award was not about the performance.  When I watched her performance I sure did want her to win, also.  But to be honest, I didn't know who the other guy was and after the song began I decided to FF through it, so I didn't even hear the other song, so that's on me.

Re: LADY GAGA'S PERFORMANCE

[ Edited ]

@chickenbutt, I too am a survivor & Gaga's performance and the survivors' on stage struck a huge nerve, I had to talk about it this morning to my husband, again.  Thank goodness he loves me & has such an open heart for my pain and the person I am & how I am, regardless of how some think of me..  I'd like to add, my "incident" occurred as an adult.

There's a lot of talk about the problem and how it goes unreported.  Rape is a felony.

Unfortunately, it's rare that anyone cautions parents to instill respect in teenage boys and emphasize this should never, ever be done.   When someone says no, they mean no.

Any parent raising boys needs to keep this in mind.

We now live in what is called a "rape culture."  Some men's groups and some fraternities make light of it, in fact support it.

There is now a movement by some to legalize rape, you can google that to see it in action.  There are reports of meet-ups of the like-minded.  I don't worry that will happen, but that there are people out there that actually believe in it.

I love Lady Gaga. I did not think this was her greatest performance. As a matter of fact, I felt that the song was musically a poor choice to showcase her vocal talent, although of course I support the sentiment that fueled it.
