I learned things I didn't know in Variety article online:

"He graduated summa ****** laude with a degree in English from Pomona College and attended Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar.

While in the U.K., Kristofferson cut his first records as Kris Carson. However, on returning to the U.S., he joined the army under pressure from his family. He ultimately attained the rank of captain, and was able to pilot a helicopter. However, on the eve of beginning an assignment to teach English at West Point, he left the army, and in 1965 he moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time. His family promptly cut ties with him."

While attending a Barbra Streisand concert here, Kris was introduced at the end of the show & came on stage & said hi. He was appearing at a different venue & stopped by Barbara's concert. No singing. It was nice to see them together again & a bonus treat for the audience.

He was simply amazing in that movie and so my big crush began with that movie! He was truly so multi-talented and seemed like a very humble man, who was not afraid also to speak up and say what he felt. He wrote so many wonderful songs which had great meaning. He will be missed beyond words.

I was never a fan of his voice or his music. I am a fan of his integrity, however. When tasked with pulling Sinead O'Connor off the stage at Madison Square Garden where the crowd was taunting her after her SNL appearance, KK went onstage, wrapped his arm around her and whispered "don't let the bastards get you down". And she began to sing.

That's why, Kris.You were a helper, not a hinderer. That's what you did to deserve the good things you enjoyed in life. May your memory be a blessing to those who loved you.
