We all need to support our local retailers - our communities depend on us for jobs! So many people are buying online - please support local retailers!

The only time I have ordered online from Kohls was when I wanted something I bought in the store in more colors, Macy's is similar for me. But those stores are close, and I like to try things on when possible.
I haven't been in the local Sears store in years, just not in the market for tools or appliances.
I feel the economy struggling every day when the stock market closing numbers are posted. It makes me nervous to see my retirement funds taking such a hit. If we had a robust economy, the market wouldn't be so unstable.

I don't think it should count against the store. There should be a house account set up for internet returns...
that would be nice be it doesn't work that way. The returns count against the store you return it to . I wish people who order online would think carefully before they go crazy and order online from boredom at home. My store manager friend says there are a LOT of shopoholics who do this constantly and it has really affected his store daily sales goals.
Well, stores might have to re-think their return policies if they want their stores to survive.

I went to Kohls yesterday for the first time in months. I like to get their short sleeve tee shirts in a variety of colors. None in yet, but looking through the department, it was crowded with clearance stuff. Crammed rack after rack. More of that than regular items.
I did find a very cute lightweight shirt, 3/4 sleeves, perfect for me. Guess I will have to wait awhile until the Spring things come in. Pretty sure I got the only Spring thing there.
Nothing in yet for Easter, either. Shouldn't there be? Including in home decorations? Easter is only a little over four weeks away.

-Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, including 154 inside the United States.
-K-Mart is closing down more than two dozen stores over the next several months.
-J.C. Penney will be permanently shutting down 47 more stores after closing a total of 40 stores in 2015.
-Macy’s has decided that it needs to shutter 36 stores and lay off approximately 2,500 employees.
-The Gap is in the process of closing 175 stores in North America.
-Aeropostale is in the process of closing 84 stores all across America.
-Finish Line has announced that 150 stores will be shutting down over the next few years.
-Sears has shut down about 600 stores over the past year or so, but sales at the stores that remain open continue to fall precipitously.
But these store closings are only part of the story.
All over the country, shoppers are noticing bare shelves and alarmingly low inventory levels. This is happening even at the largest and most prominent retailers
Do you have anything to back up this statement? I've been in a large mall recently and a few other national chain stores and have not seen any bare shelves or low inventory. Also even the Kmart in my small town has packed shelves. Friends of mine in Dallas haven't noticed any issues with store inventories either.

I would also liketo see some back-up for this statement.
I've seen nothing of the sort in my area and most of the large shopping centers are very busy.

@physicsnut wrote:...Yes, all the returns go against the store the customer returns it to which is not fair. If you buy online, you should have to return by shipping it back to the original order venue. By returning it to the store (say Kohls for instance) the returns go against the daily sales goals. While convenient for customers, I do think if you buy online you should only be able to return your items the same way....
I wonder why "they" can't come up with some way to key in a return to the original order venue, to the main store, to headquarters...or something like that. (The government should order the Apple brainiacs to come up with something...HA!)

Kohls would be bankrupt if the government were running the operations!!!

The blue underlined numbers/words in esmerelda's post are clickable...has anyone clicked to see if it's an article (or something) to back up the claims? (I'm one of those who rarely clicks on links.)

LOL...ITA.
I still say something could be devised to make online returns not count against the store or against that store's bottom line for the day.

Yep, and we know there is a lot more to that story. I just don't get why people aren't seeing the true picture of what's happening. Sad.
