A number of years ago I had just adopted a pair of young guinea pigs. The cage that we had made for them had a second floor loft with a ramp going from the first level to the second.
It was very early in the morning and my husband had just left for work and I was getting ready for work. Suddenly I heard what sounded like someone trying to break into our front door. My heart stopped and I just froze. After a minute or so I realized it was the piggies running up and down the ramp chasing each other in play.
When I realized what was making the noise I felt so silly but those few moments were so frightening. I was so surprised that such tiny little girls could make that much noise.

@SoCal Bred That would have scared the heck out of me. I'm glad it was only your cat.

We had an incident that we still talk about today. My sister & her two kids moved in with my father after her divorce. I was out on my own & living in NYC. I came home for the weekend & slept in my nieces room with her for the night. She had bunk beds for sleepovers & I took the lower berth.
During the night, we heard the front door open, footsteps across the living room ( bedrooms were upstairs & my father’s bedroom was downstairs), footsteps going up the stairs to the bedroom door of my nieces room. There was a hesitation & the door opened slowly & we saw a person standing there. The light was behind the person so we couldn’t see the face, only the silhouette but it was a man. We assumed it was my father who was checking to see if everyone was home even though it wasn’t his usual practice & he’d always knock before entry. The person then closed the door, hesitated, I guess outside of my sister’s room & my nephew’s room. We heard the steps in reverse, down the steps, across the living room & out the door.
The next morning we were talking at breakfast & in the course of conversation we mentioned my father doing room check which was odd for him & he went out so late. My father walked in during the conversation & asked what we were talking about. He wasn’t upstairs & was sleeping soundly; it wasn’t him & he didn’t go out. So now we were really creeped out. My nephew & sister heard the footsteps but the person did not open their door. My father didn’t hear any footsteps & was sleeping. Funny thing, we didn’t feel fear & our dog didn’t bark ( who slept in my sister’s room). At that time, we never locked doors but we did after that. We have no idea who it was to this day but my niece & I always talk about that night & that we didn’t feel fear; I guess because we thought it was my father.
Thats terrifying!!

Thanks a lot @Stray.
I am now scared and doubt I'll be able to sleep tonight🥺 Doesn't help that Halloween is right around the corner. I hate the Devil's "holiday" AND, two or three nights ago a black cat literally crossed in front of my car. I don't like scary.
When I was 9 or 10, I was the only one awake in our hotel room on Waikiki Beach. I was watching Alfred Hitchcock's Birds. When the scene came on with all the birds attacking the town's citizens and pecking out their eyes, I screamed bloody murder! My military dad woke up and jumped into action. Probably a good thing he didn't have a gun 😬

Just a few months ago late evening I heard a knock at my family room window--then again and again. It scared me a bit because the only way to reach the window is to walk around on my front porch. My husband was already in bed.
So, I took the dogs outside with me and a flashlight to investigate--lo and behold there was an owl who had flown into the glass a few times--maybe he saw something moving inside and it attracted him. When I shined the flashlight on him he blinked a bit and then flew away.
Now remember, I live in a big city--I have NEVER seen an owl up close before near my house, so it was a real surprise!
The first time I heard a fox scream near my house it was also quite startling.

Reminds me of how I felt sleeping in my own home (late 20's) living by myself with my dog and my cat!
Across the street was undeveloped woods (which I thought was a plus lol) and I was PETRIFIED.
No cell phones in those days!
My brain was concocting all kinds of scenarios of someone breaking in!
Your story reminds me of either Halloween ghost stories or April Fools Day!

You're brave @FancyPhillyshopper . I would have been too scared to walk outside with a flashlight.

yikes! your story gave me the creeps, until Sadie was revealed as the culprit. How cute. kiss that lil stinker on her soft forehead and tell her she has a new fan (Aunt Ko) & I'm glad it was nothin after all.
