Kitten adoption question

The only thing my kids (14,14,15yrs old)want for Christmas is a kitten. I've been in touch with a lady who rescues kittens. She had one kitten that was very playful and one that was very shy, scared but absolutely beautiful, a real sweety. The shy kitten was left for dead and was rescued by this lady and she said that this little kitten needs a lot of love and attention. I know we can provide that without question, however Do you think that a kitten can overcome bad treatment?

Or will she hide under the sofa her whole life?

Does anyone here have experience with rescues?
