Kindle touch for online browsing????

I bought the Nook Tablet from QVC back when it was the TSV in November. I like it, have tried it out, but I think it is a little much (I don't want to watch movies etc). I just need something that can do basic web browsing as well as read books/mags. Does anyone know if the lower priced Kindle (like the $99 touch) can be used to go online and browse, or is the wifi that is indicated only for downloading books/mags? TIA.
