My 16 year old dog was diagnosed last week with kidney disease. Is anyone here treating a dog for this and what type of treatment are you doing?
The vet suggested taking her to the clinic and taking the toxins out of her body for a day or two. I'm against this because of her age and he said there was no guarantee it would work even a week afterward. So considering what it would do to her emotionally I decided against it.
The vet also said to feed her a lower protein diet, give her a good multi mineral vitamin and make sure she has a lot of water to drink. I'm surprised he didn't suggest anything else since his clinic is one of the most modern with all types of new treatments. I asked if they had a handout for diets for kidney disease and they said no.
He did talk about a phosphorus binder and I checked the local pharmacies. No one seems to have it so I have to call him and ask him to get it for me.
She had blood work done in October 2012 and it was perfect. She was having some pain moving about 2 weeks before last week and I put her on Rimadyl for a week and a half, lower dose than necessary for her weight. I don't know if that affected her kidneys or it's just age.
Anyone else going through this or making their own diet for the dog. Any experience with this disease?
