Re: Kid's Names, I Thought I'd Heard it All, Till Now

GMA did a segment about this todday and ended with the statement that there are currently 330 girls in the U.S. with the name Abcde.

Wow, and I thought it ridiculous when Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple!

[ Edited ]

I retired after 26 years of teaching. I heard this name years ago. Here's three others that stand out to me. Actual students names.

La - sha (pronounced Ladasha)

Sh*thead (pronounced Sy heed)

Fantac (pronounced Fantasy)

I just watched a comic on STARZ, Dwayne Perkins, talking about names in one segment of his act.  Too funny!

My own son has taken great pains to come up with names for his two daughters that hopefully won't have name discrimination.

I agree with Dwayne Perkins and my son. They both say," remember people, they see the resume first!"

The b-c-d consonant cluster exists nowhere else in the English language. That's why it is so difficult to pronounce for English-language readers.

Remember the skiier Picabo Street?  (For those of you who don't, it's pronounced peek-a-boo.)  What is the point of spelling it Picabo if it's pronounced peek-a-boo?  If you see the name for the first time isn't your brain telling you to say Pih-CAH-bow?  How many times a day does she have to correct someone who reads her name for the first time?

I'm sure the parents thought they were very clever with that ridiculous name.  And this was back in the day before ridiculous was the norm.

Re: Kid's Names, I Thought I'd Heard it All, Till Now

Even though the agent acted like a tool and should have just kept their mouth shut and not put the boarding pass on Facebook, mom should realize there may be people out there who will react like that. It's not fair to her child that she decided she needed to be "unique." There are plenty of lovely, untraditional names out there to choose from.

Back in the 80's, I would get lots of weird looks and comments over being named Bree. Not short for Gabrielle or Breanna, but just Bree. My mom chose it after seeing the movie Klute. Jane Fonda's character was named Bree Daniels. Now it's become more common so I don't get those reactions anymore.

I remember some celebrities' kids spoke out against their names and asked parents to be more considerate when choosing. Kevin Smith's daughter, Harley Quinn, was one of them. Harley Quinn isn't bad when you think about what other famous people have named their kid, but I'm sure it's not easy being named after a comic book character that's created a lot of controversy with some fans in the last several years.

This reminds me of the Johnny Cash song “A boy named Sue”. IMO I think it’s selfish & cruel for parents to give their kids weird names. This places a lifelong target on their backs. That being said the flight attendant is a professional & clearly should have known better!! She deserves to be fired for her actions.

There is never any excuse ,or reason f,or an adult to humiliate a child, period.  They only compounded, what the poor child has to suffer, in a really ugly manner

If I ran that airline, this person would be fired.  Their behavior is inexcusable
