You must be very young.  Paying with cash has always been a thing.

@deeva  I've never had a check compromised, have you ?

I have been writing checks for 40+years and have never had a problem.  I always have my check book with me.

@Mom2Dogs  @deeva

I would NEVER take my checkbook out of the house.

I've always had a check with a post it note in my wallet.  The post it note has the check # on it for recording later.

I never use it, but it's there.

I also keep an emergency $20 bill in my wallet because walking around with no cash doesn't seem very smart.  Stuff happens.

I carry cash for tips and use credit cards for everything else. The statements keep a record for me and I don't have to wonder where and on what I spent that missing cash.

@Icegoddess  - Although I pay all my bills online, I do have to write a check monthly for the water bill.  The water department charges a fee to pay online, so it's cheaper to use a stamp!

I do keep my checkbook handy in my purse.  You never know when you need to write a check.

I was told years ago that credit card companies would not allow retailers, etc., to charge a fee for using a credit card. I guess that has changed. So that means that customers will be paying for their own rewards programs vs. the retailers.

Although I rarely write checks, I've had to go back to it.  I go to the hairdressers once a month.  They will only accept cash or check.    So now I'm back writing checks!  The salon can't afford the surcharge VISA charges etc.  Because of this, I carry my checkbook now in purse.  Never had to before.  My old salon, took VISA so it was so convenient to me. I still pay other bills online.

That's a very good idea @Icegoddess as its happening to me at alot of places as well lately.

I go to the bank and let's say about get  $500.00 in a mix of 1, 5, 10 and 20 dollar bills in case they don't have change.

As a matter of fact Im down to my last 20 and will go to the bank this week.

I'll bet with Instacart in their their charges some of it is for the credit card comanies too.

@On It  I recently had a dental procedure and was advised in advance the amount I would be charged. I was given 3 options of payment. First was cash which was 20% discount, second was credit card, and third was installment plan. I chose cash and when settling my bill I laughingly told them it felt like I was at a casino as I counted out the money and the staff counted it back to me to make sure of the correct amount remitted. I was happy to receive 20% discount for cash.

The OP mentioned an alterations shop and a nursery - both places where she was expected to pay in person.

That's not the same as a business that sends out a bill.  Those are the ones I pay online.

I've run into the same thing as the OP mentioned lately.  Some businesses want cash or a check, otherwise there's an added fee.  I even had this happen at a doctor's office.

Re: Keep Those Checkbooks Handy

I was at a chocolate shop some years ago where there was a sign that they would only accept credits  cards for amounts over $5. I don't believe that's legal but I could be mistaken.
