I believe purple is a regal or royal color, throughout history.

In this case, she most likely just likes this shade of purple/eggplant.

Pants are comfortable on a trans Atlantic flight, a dress isn't. It's also cold in Boston.

I honestly think Kate looks the best I've ever seen her look in that black outfit...even better, perhaps, than on her wedding day. She looks modern, somewhat comfortable, and up-to-date....not dowdy or too British.

I am not a fashion maven, or do I have any interest in the royal family, but she looks great. If I looked like that in pants you can bet your bippy I'd wear them all the time.

I don't get the dismay of her not wearing a dress when she got off the plane.

I would venture she didn't want the cold and wind whistlng up a dress. Also, if it was windy the hem of a dress might get caught and fly up.
