KENTUCKY DERBY-what to expect?

We are going to the KY Derby on a tour sort of and would like to know what to expect in terms of how to dress and what kind of activities will be going on during this time. I know I'll probably need to wear a dress & hat. Correct? Hubby-does he need to wear a suit or would dress pants and open neck shirt be correct. If you've been before would you tell me what to expect? Thanks for your help.
