Sheriff's office called and asked me if I went to Trader Joes on Jan 2nd. I wasn't sure so verified in my on-line checking account. Sure enough, I was there. A lady reported me as a hit and run in the parking lot. Supposedly, I hit her passenger door when I was getting in my car - she said she saw me and gave my license number. What I remember about that night was that I parked in the lot with a car on my passenger side and an open space on my driver side. When I had finished my shopping went back to my car. There was a car parked on my driver side so close that I could hardly walk between the two cars. When I got to my car door, I realized there was no way I could open the door and get in. I waited a bit and then just decided to enter my car from the passenger side and climb over the console. I remember laughing and feeling pretty good that at 68 I could climb through the car to the drivers seat. I felt a bit embarrassed and was sure glad i was wearing pants and at 6pm it was dark out. I went home and didn't think any more of the incident in fact, I didn't even mention it to my DH.
What is the motivation for the other person to lie about seeing me bang her car door? The sherriff said he would drop the hit and run charge if we would both just have our insurance companies handle the claim. Is this some kind of scam? Any thoughts?
