@Oznell

People should not own people to buy and sell. The event is joyful to me.

Slavery is wrong period! I am a seond generation from Europe. My grand parents came from Poland and England in the 1917's and they had no servants or slaves. Being Imagrants themselves the seperation at counters and restrooms shocked them.

I truly hope this won't be deemed "controversial".   How could it be--  a celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S.  It is a joyful event for every citizen, the marking of our country's leaving behind a loathsome institution of past centuries across the world.  Human ownership of other humans is rejected by all civilized people everywhere.

Whether we are "traditionalists" or "avant garde"  (I'm even avoiding political labels,ha), this is something we can all unite over, no?

My question for fellow posters who celebrate Juneteenth, do you have any special plans you'd care to share with us?

Juneteenth started to mark the end of slavery in Texas, a state where people were continued  enslaved past the abolishment of slavery. It just marked the end of slavery in Texas.@Oznell

My guess is most people don't know about it.  I didn't.  I hope people take a few minutes to tell their children (all children) about the day.

A few years ago I took my (then 12) year old granddaughter to a restaurant that had a counter to sit on.  I explained that there was a time when I was young (I'm now 70) when only white people could sit at a counter like this....She was shocked to hear it was still in my life-time....  As we sat there talking a Hispanic gentleman (working behind the counter) joined in the conversation.  He was probably in his late 60's.  He told her about his life in his native country and how difficult it was and why he and his family came to America.

It was a wonderful day and one she has talked about more than once.  Children are very receptive to learning and are curious.  They are more likely to remember and show an interest if you put things into perspective (time-wise) by putting it (the 'lesson') into something they can relate to.  At least that's what I discovered.

I try not to TELL them what to think (I want them to draw their own conclusions) but I think that can only be done when they hear all sides.  You have to trust that they have been educated enough to make the right decisions.  If not, perhaps they will learn a little something.

@Azcowgirl Knees doing well.  Have one tiny spot that doesn't want to heal (the size of a large pin head).  Been back to the surgeon at least 8 or more times....he looks at it and says, 'come back in a week'.  He said if it hasn't healed by this Tuesday I'm going to a "wound" Dr.  How about that?  They mainly deal with people with diabetes.  I don't have that and I think it's over-kill, but he's the boss.  Not quite ready to get out those white knee high go go boots from the 60's....but I'm getting there.  Thank you so much for asking...you are very kind....

qbetzforreal, thanks. We would never want to minimize the importance of the Texas event, but please see Smithsonian article above on why this takes on a general meaning for all of us.

Thank you to other posters for contributions and hearts to the thread about the significance of Juneteenth.

Love the vintage photo you posted, itiswhatitis, of two festively attired celebrants!
