Ahhh, you're killin' me here! After running the numbers many different ways, I had to conclude that it wouldn't be fair for me to try to adopt a kitty in my retirement. While I can afford food, litter, toys, etc., I'm afraid regular vet bills would be a strain on my limited budget, & any serious illness would be impossible to manage financially. If some "miracle" occurs & my financial situation improves, I will definitely get a shelter kitty.
In the meantime, keep posting those adorable kitty photos & stories. I can live vicariously through all of you!

I 2nd and 3rd the words in that poster/banner, every thing it says are facts. So anyone thinking of saving the life of 1 kitty? Please give this some serious thought?

Thank you for a very moving post. I can certainly see your love for the feline family, and to me that means a whole lot. Fortunately for my wife and myself, although we both have spent tons of time in the hospital, they were not at the same time. Has always been 1 of us to care for our large feline family(can't leave out Lily, our 1 canine).
You are doing what is right for you and that always should come first for everyone. Thank you for such a thoughtful and caring post.

aI have three rescues, two of which are brother and sister. I would have never imagined me with 3 but truth is, it's not that much more work and time. They eat , sleep and play well. Happy and healthy.

I suspect many people who would love to, and could, give kitties a good loving home are in this situation. Some are of an age where they believe they will outlive kitty, and they know no one who would take it if anything happened to them. A month's stay in rehab with no one to feed kitty and no money to pay for someone to come in to feed it. Able to afford "the usual" vet bills but not catastrophic bills and not wanting to be branded as "someone who should never have adopted" if they are unable to pay any and all unforeseen expenses. All sorts of scenarios.
Some groups allow seniors to adopt senior cats for free. Some groups, shelters and charities offer to pay vet and food bills for those who get in tight spots. But, it's not everywhere, although I think it should be, and whenever I come across a charity that does this I donate to it.
I'm also of the opinion that giving an older kitty a cozy, loving home even for a few years is better than kitty living in a cage or being euthanized.
