Welcome Birding Friends - the calendar has turned another page
and it's July!!
Watching a bird bathe is one of my favorite things so here are some pictures of birds 'keeping their cool' in the summer heat.
Among the trees
Is a bird's nest,
And in the nest
Her three eggs rest.
And in each egg ~~
Hush, you'll be heard! ~~
There lies asleep
A tiny bird.

Birdmama, Thanks for our July roosting place.
I found the above photo and thought of Poppi and Peewee, so I thought I'd post it here for you. Not sure which species of sparrow the little birds above are, but they are sparrows and "relatives" of your two featherbabies.
Am going to drag the last post I put on the June thread, not much on it though.

Hi Birding Friends, It was a real scorcher here in Florida today. 97 in Tampa, and it was humid on top of it. I am so ready for Autumn. It's hard to believe that this is the last day of June, though.
Watered DS's peppers and palms + the patio plants and the loquats. I started those trees from loguat fruit that my youngest GS and I ate and we saved the seed and I put them on very moist(wet) paper towels until the roots formed and a small sprout formed at the other end of the seed, then I planted them in small pots. The biggest tree is now about 9 feet high and growing. The other, which he finally set in the ground in May, is about 6 feet tall is is doing well. He planted some orange honeysuckle and a crimson bougainvillea and all these plants need water, especially with the heat and humidity we've been having here. ~~~
~~~ Haven't seen any hummingbirds here yet, at least not in the back yard. DDIL planted a couple different plants that attract hummers. The one in the back yard, fire spike, is struggling in the heat and looks like it's wilting. It's not setting on blossoms like it did last year. The one in the front garden is huge and I see butterflies etc around it, but so far no hummers. Kind of strange that they're not here.
Kachina, When I was watching the Barred owl and her owlets, I saw things I didn't like either. Blue jays and smaller birds were part of the diet along with rodents and even snakes. Those baby owls ate everything and anything. I had no idea that owls ate other birds. I know about the Accipiter hawks; the Coopers, Sharpshin, Kestrel hawks etc. but was surprised about the jays and songbirds. The Bluejays are one of my favorite birds to watch and feed. They are smart, but not when it comes to Barred Owls, I guess.
My right shoulder is giving me a fit again tonight. It's the one that's been "frozen" twice and had many cortisone shots in it. Don't know what set it off over the past few days. It's been years, knock on wood, since I have had to have a shot in it.
Waving to all my Birding Friends, Peaceful dreams and a lovely Tuesday.
Is the top bird pretending to be a water fountain, lol? I didn't know birds did this, and I have seen many bathe.
Kachina posted this information in June's nest yesterday. Fascinating to me since the only roadrunner I know is
From Kachina 624:
I bet most of you don't know that Roadrunners are carnivorous. I've seen several here in my neighborhood with baby birds in their mouths. Friends had one that would peck on their patio door and they'd feel it bits of hamburger meat. There is a huge 20ft tall yucca plant right up against my fence in the neighbors' yard. It's a sparrow condo and is loaded with nesting birds all spring and summer.
These birds have symbiotic relationship with my dogs. When a Roadrunner is atop the block fence the birds raise a fierce ruckus and my dogs rush out to chase the bird away. They can't actually reach the bird but they raise enough fuss that it leaves. I encourage it because the Roadrunners eat the lizards, which I like to watch and they eat bugs.
I can't figure out how the Roadrunners survive in winter as there are no baby birds or lizards yet they don't fly enough to migrate. They're odd ducks, so to speak.
Possummink - we had mid to upper 80's with some humidity and I thought I was going to pass out. I don't have any respiratory issues, thank goodness, but my body cannot seem to tolerate heat and humidity. Been like this since I was a kid. I am sorry that your shoulder is hurting you. I had frozen shoulder in 2004 - according to the young doctor who treated me - the worst case he had ever seen. (He was young, really, how much frozen shoulder had he seen?). The shot was a pistol and I couldn't move an inch as he ground it between my bones to get the medicine where is needed to go. I honestly thought I could reach out and touch the face of God it hurt so bad. I didn't go to regular PT, doctor said PT would hurt more than help so I exercised at home and finally had full mobility by Christmas. I was convinced that washing the walls that year freed my shoulder
. I know now that when my shoulder twinges, don't baby it or it will freeze up. I think I have winged scapula on my right shoulder now. I really need to have someone look at it since I'm constantly popping my shoulder back in the joint. I am hesitating because I can take the pain and besides, who will take care of my birds and house if I need surgery. Maybe if they did it outpatient (lol)?
