Wall Street Journal
However, the arrival of Jimmy Fallon at the “Tonight” show on NBC has upset this steady state of affairs of late. While last season, “The Daily Show” was the clear winner among all viewers in the 18-34 demographic with 629,000 viewers by this point in the season, this year it has seen that demographic drop off by 22% so far this season, while Mr. Fallon’s “Tonight” has pulled ahead—up 36%—to 519,000 viewers in that demographic. NBC, as a broadcast network rather than a cable network, has always drawn a bigger audience of total viewers, averaging nearly 4 million so far this season, according to Nielsen.

Imagine that!

That is because The Daily Show is driven by politics and this is an ""off"" cycle year.
ALL cable news saw a drop in numbers....and they all will pick up in 2016.

Its a comedy show and the kids are tuning in to Jimmy Fallon. No biggie. He's got bigger fish to fry. He said his heart was no longer in it.

Not a bit of difference.
You both looked up something to support your posts.

Sorry Holly...it's driven by political news...it's political satire.
He didn't quit over ratings...he enjoyed writing and directing Rose Water and wants to do more projects like that.
He went out a huge winner.

The ratings didn't drop that much considering it was a satirical treatment of the news and current events. Stewart has been quick to point out that he is NOT a newsman; he's a comedian. He still has around 12 million or more tuning in. He's a genius at what he does, but I think he's just tired of doing it for 17 years. There are many arenas out there for other creative endeavors by him. His Rosewater film shows his commitment to real life stories and issues. Frankly, I would be shocked if he ran for political office because I don't think he really has any respect for politicians, understandably. It will be interesting to see if anyone emerges who can fill Stewart's shoes. I have my doubts, though John Oliver would have been my first choice had he not secured his own show on HBO.

We don't know why he quit, we're not mind readers (cough) but he did say he didn't want the job if his heart wasn't in it 100 percent. He should do more projects like Rose Water.

Whomever replaces him will have mighty big shoes to fill.

Ahhh. Thus the "get rid of Leno".
