Re: Johnny Mathis retires at 89!

He ends his tour, Voice of Romance, on May 18 in Englewood, NJ due to age and memory issues.  His reviews for this tour have been very good.........one of the reviews stated:  "Mathis' performance “the most beautifully romantic concert in a theater in recent memory.”

I have enjoyed Johnny Mathis since I first heard "Chances Are", I've been fortunate enough to be able to attend several of his live performances and have been overwhelmed by his performance, professionalism, kindness and voice.  He, just, sings, no jokes, no pitter patter, just wonderful songs and a lovely romantic voice.

A true gentleman.

To me, a TRUE talent is when a singer can stand alone on a stage and command the attention of everyone in the room.

No need for gyrating dancers if you have a great voice.  Johnny Mathis could hold a room of any size.

Others who could do that were Sinatra, Streisand, Neil Diamond, Tony Bennett ... to name a few.

I still have his album from the 60s, when I was in high school. The Twelfth of Never was always my favorite song.

What an amazing talent, to still be performing, in his 80s.

I hope that he enjoys his well earned retirement, in good health.

      He was very handsome.

30 years ago, my husband and I took my mom to his concert at the Ordway Theater in Minnesota as a Mother's Day gift. She was just delighted and we enjoyed him too. Money well spent!

I didn't even know he was still alive, lol.  He had a voice as smooth as Buddah. What a voice

Re: Johnny Mathis retires at 89!

No idea why I never got to see Johnny live! I have attended many hundreds of concerts, but somehow missed him.

He was all the rage in my high school and college years, the master of the romantic ballad. Such a beautiful, silky voice. His records were in heavy use by young men who were would-be seducers of young ladies! 😉

I am now almost a San Francisco native, having moved here in 1970. I can tell you San Franciscans are very proud of him, a graduate of Lowell High School. Carol Channing was also a Lowell graduate.

Saw Johnny Mathis perform live sereral times and was never disappointed.  Allways a class act.  HIs singing is so effortless.  My favorite of his songs is The Twelvth of Never.

Re: Johnny Mathis retires at 89!

I only saw him perform on those variety shows back in the day.  What perfection.  Some of those great singers from back in the day no longer have "that voice" but continue to perform.  Sometimes you gotta know when to stop and not listen to those telling you otherwise.
