Of course he doesn’t look the same in all roles.

Movies can be fully made and ‘sit in the can’ for awhile before releasing.  Also, he probably filmed his ‘normal weight’ parts in other movies before he got too thin.  He’s a secondary actor in those other films, whereas the Richard movie, he’s the main character.   

Dieting to below normal weight, as well as dieting ABOVE normal weight,

is not uncommon for an actor/actress.

Also...in the links above, they were dated July 2017...almost a YEAR ago.

I truly believe it’s just for a part...maybe an Academy awarding winning part at that.  And...if he’s publically photographed being really thin, it’s free marketing for the movie...gets the ‘buzz’ going.

Pro Tip:  Think like an actor and/or Agent.

The links are dated 2017, because that's when the filming wrapped on that movie. I would think in a year he would've gained the weight back, at least some of it.

@KingstonsMom This is a pic of him filming the early part of the movie, before the character's diagnosis or at least before his decline. The way Depp looks more recently is how he will appear later in the film.

The filming wrapped on that movie in summer of 2017. This pic is from June, 2017, not so bad looking here.

Depp is pictured in June, 2017, at Glastonbury festival in England when he had a full head of hair and fuller face

@KingstonsMom According to wiki, filming started in July 2017. At the beginning of filming, he would still have needed to look "normal."
