@jubilant Tell your sil to be sure to file for Unemployment Insurance as soon as he leaves his job. He can file as soon as he's off the company payroll.

That stinks. All the best to him. Make sure he finds about severance pay, time owed to him and apply for unemployment insurance.
He should secure references from this job professional and personal.
He should then catch his breath.

This will depend on any severance package he gets @Kachina624 (if any at all). In some cases you can't have both.

@jubilant make sure your SIL knows his state's rules on severance, any paid days not taken and so forth. It might affect his ability to get UE.
Here's a starter:
Unemployment insurance can be a boon when you're suddenly laid off, but getting severance pay may pull that financial cushion out from under you.
Like an unemployment check, severance pay is also intended to ease your transition to your next job. Yet some states may ask you to choose between the two.
So when and how does severance affect unemployment insurance? It depends on your particular situation, including which state you live in. Here are a few possibilities:

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully he'll find another job in his field or in a related field.

Sorry to hear about this. I hope he gets a good severance package. I saw a guy on tv the other morning who preps people over 40 on résumés and interviews. He said all employers want now are people with skills, and lots of them. Sounds like your SIL would have many and I wish him the best in finding an even better position. Consultants in his field stay very busy; I have a former colleague whose son travels a lot as a consultant in industrial engineering. Companies want to pay consultants without the commitment of benefits.

@gertrudecloset I know that but this is not the place to get into specifics.

That s*****. Hopefully he has made networking acquaintances in the business. Hope he stays positive! True believer that when a door is closed, a bigger and better opportunity awaits! Maybe not overnight...but something good will come out of this unfortunate situation.
