They're both peculiar. 

I think it an unfortunate choice. The child will forever be compared to his namesake. He will have to endure stories and reminiscences of his uncle from everyone he meets.

He deserves his own name, his individuality; for his life to be about him not some well known, tragically dead relative.

It's an unfair burden placed on their child without his consent.

If they want River remembered there are other ways like establishing a foundation, scholarship, trust, clinic...in his name.
