Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

I definitely understand where you are coming from.

My husband was laid off from every job he ever had, so we were quite familiar with unemployment.   With his mechanic and welding certification, the longest he was unemployed was about 8 months.   He could always find handy work to do on the side while he was looking for a job with benefits.   When the last company he worked for shut down, my husband rode out his unemployment to the very end, then applied for disability.   He already had a percentage of disability, had more health issues, and was 60, so it was time for him to stop working.

The first layoff came 5 years after we built our house, and my husband was the only one working at that time, so I had a lot of anxiety about paying our bills.   I did what I had to do, which was get a job, then he got a job, and we paid off our house early.

Looking back on the years, the layoffs were a good thing, as each new job was better than the last, and helped my husband continue to learn new skills.  As a family we just took it all in stride, and kept going.   We always lived within our means, so it was just a matter of him finding the right job.

We learned a lot from our life experiences; to keep the faith, trust in each other, and know things always work out in the end.   Stay focused on doing what you have to do, and never doubt your ability.

Very best wishes to you!

Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

@makeup addict

My little lhasa keeps me going every day --- and I had a lot of difficult times to overcome.

I was a stenographer/secretary thru the years. So - starting 1990's, no one needed a stenographer who typed on an electric typewriter -- LOL.

I never learned the computer (I can type very well) - since I was a realtor from 1987 to 1991 - when companies were teaching it in their offices.

So - finding a job at 50 years old - having no skills -- and no resume was very challenging.

I grabbed temp jobs, part-time jobs, telemarketing jobs, jobs with MEAN, NASTY bosses, etc.

So - from 1991 thru 2003 - I had jobs I would never have considered --- but I mostly kept working. A miracle happened. In 1999 I was hired for a small company -- and they had me stocking pamphlets (and removing "old" pamphlets) in their storeroom - which required me to use a stepladder. They were also mean to me. I wound up suing them --- and won a BIG settlement..

I'm now retired -- but at least 3 times in the 1990's --- I was one paycheck away from homelessness.

Perhaps u could go to a temp agency or find a part-time job --- until the right job comes along. Telemarketing jobs are always available. Do u own a home where u could rent out rooms?

I've been down that road several times in my life.  It's never an easy road, but it sounds like you have family and friends to help you through  Smiley Happy

Turn to the One who will take care of you in this uncertain time of your life.  God will provide a way.  He always does.  Put your trust in Him and He will lead.  He already has.  The fact that you will be receiving severance pay is a great start.   Think about it.  Most companies that are downsizing positions don't offer severance pay.  And they are offering you resume and interviewing skill services, both which can be costly if you paid for on your own Smiley Happy  And then you'll also recieve unemployment benefits.  So that's a positive right out of the gate!

I will keep you in my prayers.  Just keep looking up and He will open another door.  Just remember - it's not in your time.  It's in His  Smiley Happy

@makena

Blessings are a way of thanking God for what we have in our lives.  She has LOTS of blessings for sure.  First, she has severance pay, which most companies don't offer.  Second, she has unemployment benefits.  And third, her company is offering both interview skills training and resume service.  Two things that can cost a lot if you have to pay for.

So - I would say that's a lot of blessings to be counted that WILL pay the bills  Smiley Happy

Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

I'm surprised you had advance notice.  A few years ago, a few coworkers were let go the first week of January with absolutely no notice.  Yes the company offered them those same transitioning classes, but the one friend I stayed in contact with took her unemployment and gave up looking.  After 22 years on the job, she could not find any job except at Subway.  She took Social Security when she reached age 62.

Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

@gardenman Hugs and prayers to you!  The person I talked to from the transition company called flex jobs .com.  The jobs listed there are legit and have been vetted to confirm they are real companies not scams. They have regular full time/part time and contract jobs.  Entry level to seasoned people. You can check out the site, but for the full job info, you have to pay.  I think for one month it's 14.00. I'm going to do it for three months.

Transition person warned me that I will probably not have a new job in the first month. Like many of y9u have said: my job is to find a job.  She didn't recommend taking a lower paying job until that was the only option.  She liked my LinkedIn  page, but told me I was too vague with my resume.  That's my homework assignment: to. Change it up and then send it to their resume specialists.  She also told me to sign up for webinars at her site and LinkedIn.

Thank you for everyone who responded; going thru the posts now.

I have and do work in a paperless environment for almost eight years now.  I love it. It was always a pain to try to find the paper file; things were not filed correctly or another person would have info on their desk. By going paperless, we can all access the same info at the same time.

It looks like NC does qualify for unemployment insurance based on what I read on the state cite.  It sounds like it will be beneficial.  I'm also going to see someone at the unemployment office next week. I know I can file online, but I think talking to someone when this officially begins, will help me.  Today is a calm day. Parents have been wonderful. They bought me some nice clothes for interviews.  Downloaded the Flipp app to save on groceries and supplies.

Beagles kisses are the best.

Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

@granny me Love he got them tshirts!  Lol. Yeah the one team they were trying to put together at my company didn't take off. They couldn't justify the head count.  I had three interviews for that job. The last guy, the head honcho for that department informed me that there were people on his team who felt they were entitled and that they often clash with the other generations on the team. I told him how I would handle and he seemed pleased.  Our work environment is catered to the younger generation. I she the open floor plan. I liked my walls at my pervious job. I could tune everyth8ng out and focus on my work. Now I can hear and see everything and people stop by to chat. Ugh.  The layout was inspired by Google.  Problem is what we do is not that collaborative so it's distracting.  I'm not going to miss that.

until they are no longer treat as entitled, life for everyone else could be miserable.

Re: January 1st I will be unemployed for the first time in my life

@Tinkrbl44 Severance is 12 weeks.  There is a seven day revocation period. After that, they will send me forms to sign and get notarized and Fed Ex back to them and then they will FedEx my copy back to me to use for unemployment.

You are lucky to be getting severence - many people don't get anything but a boot in the butt.

When my first husband was killed our employees had jobs one day and they didn't the next. I could not do anything for them but sign for them to get unemployment , but there were unfinished jobs in the shop so I told them if they finished those jobs up they could have whatever they charged the customers. That only kept them working a few days, then I closed the doors and declared the company bankrupt.

@151949  My condolences on the loss of your husband.  I'm very fortunate to have only only severance, but was told months before that my job was being abolished. I had friends who worked in the banking and in the mortgage industries and got no warning. Basically told to grab a box, pack their stuff and leave.
