The actors/musicians do not pay the fee themselves.

I'm pretty sure Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh do not/did not have checkbooks.

The candiates are sponsored.

@Cakers   Maybe not, but somebody has to pay that fee (this year it was $40k) and it’s usually the person who does the nominating.  They aren’t “sponsored.”

1. It is understood that the cost of installing a star in the Walk of Fame upon approval is $40,000** and the sponsor of the nominee
accepts the responsibility for arranging for payment to the Hollywood Historic Trust, a 501(c)3 charitable foundation

@Cakers Okay. Took your earlier “sponsored” to mean like NASCAR is sponsored.

Y’all know people “buy” those stars, right? All one needs is a publicist and a checkbook.

Yes. The cost for the star and upkeep is $40,000 paid by the “STAR”.
