Racism still exists. Words that make feel all warm and fuzzy inside are nice, but the reality is, people still get stopped and harassed for no reason.

It's been 50 years, and it's still there, the bigotry, mistrust, etc.

Sure, some things have changed.

No more separate water fountains, can sit at the counter etc.

But when a person gets pulled over for DWB, stop and frisk, etc and racist "jokes" about the first family are freely forwarded, then that tells me, that the words said today are falling on deaf ears.

And if we've only moved forward an inch in 50 years, it'll be a hundred before we will have even covered a mile.

Racism is a two way street though you don't believe it. Stop living so much in the past You are part of the problem. Stop playing victim.

If you own a dog and beat it, kick it and treat it terribly - when the dog eventually has had enough and bites you - do you blame the dog???

I now it's a simplistic comparison - and prejudice might go two ways - but that's due to one group literally coming here in chains and living as slaves - then being treated like second class citizens or worse for generations.

When the poor and the oppressed have issues with the oppressors - it's a natural reaction.

When the colonists had enough of oppressive English rule - they revolted violently. When the poor in France had enough of the kings, queens and feudal system that kept them in abject poverty - they revolted violently.

Dell, Thanks for your post; it did what is so hard to do on these anniversaries, by showing how many things became possible (for real people and real lives) because of the inspired leadership of the civil rights movement. Awesome post!

What a lovely compliment Burnsite. My real life wouldn't be what it is today without those who fought for so many things. I couldn't have married my husband or had my children and grandson. My office diversity would not be what it is. Thanks again. And for those who keep on saying we have a long way to go - I know that, but I can be totally grateful for the brave men and women you had the gumption to go fight for what was right. And at a very high price.

I only wish the posters who were posting excellent thoughts on a speech given Monday could have been allowed to share their feelings. I guess racism is allowed but not other topics.
