It's That Time Of Year Again. Any New Apple Varieties In Your Region?

...and what's your favorite?

My favorite eating apple is Empire. It has the perfect balance between sweet and tart. Gala comes in second. I also like the Honeycrisp, but I noticed that their season is very short.

They've been pushing the Acey-Mac the past couple of years, but I'm not that fond of Macintosh.

How about you?

Oh I love Fuji also and Ambrosia. Ambrosia I think is over for our area to receive but I love them the most.

Not much of anything grows here, but we get a lot of great produce from the region. I go with California produce as much as possible.

My favorite is the Gala. I tried the Honey Crisp one time, based on a review I read on this board one year (never even heard of them before that) and found them to be much inferior to the Gala, so I went right back. Smiley Happy Glad I only bought a couple of those.

Fortunately, we seem to have them all year long. Some parts of the year I think they come from New Zealand or somewhere around there and they seem to be as good as the local ones.

I love the tart/crisp of McIntosh and I buy locally from the orchard. I'm more concerned lately where our food comes from.

He does not have any of the new varieties but that's probably because of the time/cost to invest and grow on his land.

Last fall I bought 2 bushels. Sliced, prepped, froze, etc. They lasted thru until late Feb/early March.

Another New Zealand variety has appeared in the stores.

Always use Macintosh when making applesauce. My family loves it chunky style so I make about

12 qts. every autumn. Gets is through the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Look for SweeTango which is a relative of Honeycrisp.

Honey Crisp is my favorite. I like sweet and juicy apples.

Any others you can recommend that are sweet? I do not do TART
