@beach-mom.  I asked to be assigned to a base in the Southwest.  lol, I ended up in Little Rock, Ar., which is in their Southwest region but it wasn't what I had in mind.  It was a nice base though.  I did spend about 3 months in school in Amarillo, where we had a really good time riding horses in Palo Duro Canyon on weekends.

I think i picked personnel as a career speciality because my dad worked in corporate personnel.   They didn't lie to me at all.

@Kachina624 - It sounds like you had an amazing time! And you got to ride horses!

We used to live in Texas, near a then-closed base that I think was a basic training place for pilots. I remember they talked about it's being established during WWII.

You knew what you wanted to do too, because of your dad. I think I would have liked working in personnel or Human Resources. I went into teaching instead. Smiley Happy

@Kachina624  what a great career. Must have been in the Air Force where you saw 12 o.'clock high? At a managment seminar?

@beach-mom  I keep highjacking this thread. You said your husband is named for his uncle who died at the end of the war in the Philippines. Was he in the MBS 611 by any chance? My mother's first husband flew a PBJ with MBS 611 in the Philippines, and he was in a crash. He passed from his injuries a month after he married my mom. No one is alive now who would know anything more than I know, but I have been searching for information about him. The CAF Camarillo CA has a PBJ restored to MBS 611 colors. Info is so hard to come by, and I have such respect for all these heroes mentioned in this thread.

@Kachina624 :Thank you for sharing your achievements. Thank you for your service.

My DH is retired Army. He was in California for several years . Travelled to so many areas scheduling appointments for the admissions test,  giving and grading everything. Met several people that were child actors taking the test.

Then transferred to the south. His choice was personnel office .He wanted to take care of the new recruits , make sure they had the correct papers, forms and everything needed for future training, advancement and  correct documentation of their military career.

I feel so proud for DH whenever we are out in our area and he sees and talks with someone that he had helped.

Thanks again for your service. I love reading all the very special posts .

@Sassycoco : Thank you .❤

I enjoyed shopping in the commissary and watching DH sitting on the bench and visiting with his special friends.

My favorite memories include  whenever we were invited to special events or lunch with OCS.

During every holiday, I stayed busy baking special treats  for each department  , and other clerks.

Finally  had to cheat and use prepackaged  cookie mixes and cake mixes that I added extra ingredients to taste home made. I was shopping and my cart was full. Turned the corner and one of the clerks was looking for me : she wanted my chocolate chip cookie recipe. I started laughing and replied: " Busted". Look at my cart= my recipe and all  the ingredients.

She was precious. She replied: Everything is delicious because " Everything is stirred with Love" and thank you.

When we returned home from shopping: DH emails were full from everyone. Stated please continue the tradition. I had a big supply of the Zip lock rectangular containers and everyone would send the empty containers back to me with special notes and looking forward to the next holiday. I was only able to do this for two years after DH retired. Precious memories and loved helping DH .

Hi @KLm ! @Kachina624 - I hope it's OK if we talk about this here!

I'll start with a little background. DH's mom told me about this shortly after we were married. I thought it was a big deal, but everyone else was pretty blasé about it, including DH, who never told me when we were dating! She said he was piloting a plane that was shot down off the coast of the Philippines, they found his copilot but never found him, and there is a memorial to them somewhere in the Philippines. Then she passed away from breast cancer shortly after.

DH's dad's standard answer was, "Yeah, he was shot down. Never found him." And that was that. Apparently they had a memorial service, because years later my father-in-law gave us the flag they had given his father. (DH's paternal grandmother died in childbirth when DH's dad was a toddler. His grandfather never remarried.)

Fast forward a lot of years! DH and I went to a graduate school lecture about historical shipwrecks. The professor mentioned finding planes from WWII and showed some slides. After it was over I couldn't wait to talk to him! I wrote the name down. He said he would guarantee he could find out information!

He later emailed me, including some previous classified information. It turns out there were more than 2, all were killed except one, and they recovered everyone except one.

We found out it was a B24, heading out on a bombing run in 1945.  They tried unsuccessfully to find the plane in 2019. The team has recovered lots of lost planes. They find personal effects and return them to the families. Families usually have services that the community and team members attend.

DH's uncle is listed officially as MIA. DH and I have talked about what would happen if they did find the plane. They plan to look again, but no specific plan is in place yet. The team's base is California. We are hopeful!

None of DH's surviving sisters is excited about this. His widowed brother-in-law is. The next generation down can't relate at all. DS is somewhat intrigued in learning about it; DD is not. Our nephews and one niece are not.

I've always been interested in history, especially family history. I find it frustrating so many others are not!

I had my own glorious career in the USAF, entering Officer Training School in Januar 1964.  Women weren't allowed anywhere near airplanes at that time except as passengers.  I don't think I would have wanted to be a pilot as I'm not that crazy about flying.

My class at OTS did break one barrier when we were the first group allowed to learn to fire pistols on the firing range.  It was voluntary; 13 of our class of 18 women volunteered.  After a few days of practice, I qualified as an "expert" marksman.

After attending Personnel Officer School, I was assigned to supervise a division of our base personnel office which was part of the Strategic Air Command.

I eventually  got married and resigned my commission.  Both, big mistakes.

I cannot tell you what a JOY it was to read this surprisingly informative post!👍 Since my earliest days here, I have found you to have a very concise, NO-NONSENSE style of chat that COMMANDS attention, and now I know why!😊 To say that I am impressed at your early life achievements is an understatement!!!❤

I ALWAYS enjoy and look forward to reading your razor sharp and witty responses; though some give me the WOW😲 face, and leave me in stitches!😂 I jest, but I have much reverence❤ for you after reading of your IMPRESSIVE PIONEERING history!🤗

Since learning of your awe-inspiring skills as a sharpshooter, I would NOT want to enter your home unannounced!😁 Just call me Sandy Hightails It!!!😂😂

I ADMIRE and appreciate your exemplary service, and THANK you for sharing this most enjoyable post!!!.👍

@Kachina624 Yes thanks for letting us post on this thread and your work life seems like it was exciting!

@beach-mom  The PBJ was a B25. Used by the Navy. If he was an Army pilot, this would have been a different group entirely. How interesting that people go about locating lost airmen and crews. What an honor it must be to find one and reunite personal belongings with families. Thanks for posting so much information.

Everyone on this thread is so kind and knowledgeable, sharing information with the rest of us. I really appreciate everyone's contributions here.
