and I just finished taking off the pipe under the bathroom sink to get my diamond earring out. 

I only take them out to clean them and was putting them in a tea strainer clamp to rinse them. Obviously I missed. UGH

One day my mother said, "watch this", and she spread a washcloth flat in the bottom of the sink, covering the drain....

I know that's nothing. But that little 'nothing' precaution has saved me jewelry, pills, other little things that get dropped right there.

To not drop anything down any drain, I learned years ago to put the plug in first.  Learned that lesson where I worked when some woman kept dropping her necklace or whatever down the drain more than once.  Cover the drain first.  It's alive, it eats things dangled over it.

my first anniversary my lovely Mother in Law wanted to get me some Diamond earrings.   long story I never did get them.  we didn't find any that we liked. 

but they are way too easy to lose, and now CZs look so good,

We removed the sink stoppers from our sinks and inserted mesh stoppers.  They will prevent anything from going down the drain that you don't want to lose.

You can find packs of them with various sizes included so you don't have to buy them individually.  They really are relatively cheap.
