Darn it, I could have used that in math class !

I totally agree!  Technology can be good however it can also be our downfall.  I do not understand people that live on their phones.  I never use a cell phone. I keep a flip phone for emergencies only but never use it.  Hubs has an iphone but doesn't live on it.

@LuvmyLab   I have a flip phone too.... I never use it and only put it in my purse if I go shopping and the car breaks down or something. My Hubby has a smart phone and he LIVES on it.. tells me I need one... I tell him WHY?

Possibly for the same reason you spend your time posting on a shopping channel's message board--information & entertainment. Just a thought.

You're basically doing the same thing he does, using the internet, you just use a different medium. That's not to shade either of you, you'd likely say I "live" on my phone as well because I use it for so many things. I will say it's interesting, though, that people have such a hard time grasping that.

eta ~ happliy, when I say "people," the list is very short and the subject never seems to arise anywhere other than here.

@SeaMaiden :  My smartphone is my only phone.  Except for maybe 5 calls daily I primarily use it to entertain myself in waiting rooms.  So much better than nasty outdated magazines we used to have to settle for; sometimes I read a book on my device.

Why do kids need phones in school. I think it should not be allowed.  Just do the school work NO PHONES.

We "got a man to walk on the moon" without computers or phones? Seriously?

@SeaMaiden :  The U.S. Government got its first mainframe computer, Univac I, in the early 1950s ( my Dad worked on it at Census Bureau) and moon shoot was in 1969.  You don't think that mainframe computers ( currently still being used by DoD, Census, IRS etc) were an important component in a successful moon shot? Cell phones and tablets don't do it all!

I think if a student's cell phone is in their book bag and kept out of sight, it's alright.

Unfortunately, there here have been disasters where a student's cell phone was used to alert authorities.

I feel the same as @4kitties and my grands all had cell phones with limited capabilities in grammar school and the peace of mind for parents is well worth it.  The world is a different place today then it was when most of us went to school. None of the schools allow phones on during class/study time so learning is not impacted.  So many other pluses, to numerous to mention.

To be fair, @SeaMaiden  mentioned not having the internet during early space flights though I'm pretty sure we did have phones, lol.

However, I have to say, I never understand these anti-technology threads. Simply because we survived and did some really cool things before computers, the internet, and smartphones were commonly used why would we want to go backward?

That just makes no sense at all.

eta ~ I just went back and read the OP and it turns out the comment included "barely any computers to speak of...just using our brains."

I was talking about the smart phones today.
