Re: It Seems Trendy to Abbreviate Now

I come from the world of NASA, so I'm quite accustomed to abbreviations and acronyms; they love them.  But, you have to spell it out and put the abbreviation/acronym in parentheses the first time it is used.  Many times I don't recognize the abbreviation and it depends on how interested I am in the post as to whether I ask or just move on.  I am a stickler for proper spelling and word use for myself though.

Re: It Seems Trendy to Abbreviate Now

I have taken speed reading courses three times and while I don't enjoy reading fast, I can. I find these irritating abbreviations slow me down greatly and I actually loose some comprehension along the way.

Sometimes I think it's people trying to be "currently cool". When I text my nieces/nephews in their 20s they never abbreviate. And then there are relatives in their 50s who do it all the time. Does "nd" really save time over  "and"?

Those who feel their fellow posters should have to take the time to peruse Urban Dictionary to figure out what they are saying...well, your words simply aren't that important to me.

Now what is it they say in the South? BYH 😄

Re: It Seems Trendy to Abbreviate Now

I have come to believe people shorten words because they don't know to spell them. So many times on this forum, abbreviations are used instead of words. Many times I have to look up their meanings because I don't have a clue. Sometimes, I just move on because it is so frustrating.

Re: It Seems Trendy to Abbreviate Now

I think it has everything to do with texting...all the abbreviations are modern-day shorthand.
People don't communicate well any longer, and it's a shame. Eye contact and face-to -face speaking would put an end to so much of the vitriol that we hear about on the news or on social media. Most would never say some of the things to a person's face that they have no problem posting.

I don't mind those that are universally known, like TV, OT, and FYI. I like that the British refer to The Salvation Army as Sally's and Goodwill as Willy's.

I don't watch Q anymore, but when I watch a video for something I may buy and hear

"this is 5% span" instead of spandex, it just sounds ridiculous to me.

Re: It Seems Trendy to Abbreviate Now

In school these days kids are not taught how to spell, how to construct a sentence (remember diagramming?), how to write a business letter, punctuation, grammar, etc. I kind of blame the school system plus texting and social media.

If a poster uses abbreviations and can't construct a simple sentence, I assume they're young and don't know any better. Are we even going to be able to understand future generations?

I'm almost 50 years old and have enjoyed a career in management and have not had to write a single business letter ever.

They are not in school half the time. I see kids in Walmart all the time 12 months out of the year. Then here comes covid and they lost the better part of two yrs.
