Soup Plantation had been in business for 40 years and also went by the name Sweet Tomatoes. After reeling from the initial shock that there was a pandemic, I think the speed in which it took that company to give up 97 restaurants and 4400 employees just couldn't be possible. A searing hurt, disappointment and frustration in not being able to say no don't close, wait it out, change your model from buffet style to cafeteria....just don't go away but no not the public's choice or given the ability to say it.
Many other businesses I'm sure affected people like that too.

Sad. My family really liked that place. Don't live by one anymore, but when we did, it was a great go to place for our family.

I did not know they were still in business.

During all the years late DH and I lived in Torrance in So. Cal. we loved that place. We'd often meet DS and his family there. Sometimes on Sunday or Saturday, sometimes during the week.
Always loved their food. Sad to see them go.

When my kids were young and we would visit my parents in Florida we all enjoyed going to Sweet Tomatoes. We looked forward to it since there weren't any in my area.
Sad to hear.

I don't believe we'll be seeing anymore salad bar or buffet style restaurants. I have memories of meeting my daughter for lunch at Soup Plantation years ago.

My kids loved those places too. ITA that buffet style will not come back for a long time, if ever. It's too bad they didn't try to reinvent themselves into a different type of restaurant, maybe all you can eat like Olive Garden sometimes does, but with things delivered to your table.

Recently? Where did you see this reported?
ETA - Okay, I googled the info and say that I can't blame them. That's a LOT of rent to pay for restaurants closed for many months ... if they can't open yet, where do they generate the revenue from to cover the rents, utilities, etc etc?
I don't think they "threw in the towel so early".
Even if they could open soon to limited seating, they'll never make that lost money back. Of course, perhaps they could open a few restaurants in a couple years, but buffets are still going to be problematic for (Covid) health reasons.
