Re: It Costs A Lot To Eat The Recommended Amounts of Fruits/Veggies/Nuts

When we lived closer to the city, we had a garden. We grew tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplant. Once we moved out here, we planted one, only to have it ravished by deer, and rabbits. I had a patio garden for a few years, and planted cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes in pots. They have a tomato variety specifically for patio pots. It's a medium sized tomato. I haven't planted one for a few years. I wish I had planted one this year. It really is fun to watch everything grow, and of course it's great to have a small harvest. My son was going to plant one for us, but the timing was off, and we didn't do it. He grows everything in his garden, including greens, and lots of herbs.

I do not think vanilla soft serve cones are going to feed the world healthy. In fact it would be healthier to eat nothing than a sugar empty calorie junk treat.

The point was wasting of food right?

If things like that don't bother you then fine.

Re: It Costs A Lot To Eat The Recommended Amounts of Fruits/Veggies/Nuts

We attend an old country church that has two long benches on the front porch. All season long the members bring whatever extra garden produce they have and just put it there in baskets. People are to take what they can use or can give to others who might need it. We get all of our tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. that way. I quit growing vegetables when I realized they really were trying to give their extras away. One plants 75 tomato plants every year just because he enjoys doing it! We also are blessed to have several farmer's markets near us.

To reciprocate, those of us who don't have extra produce to share take baked goods like banana bread or muffins to share. Works out wonderfully for all.

I agree, I just don't buy the "eating healthy is expensive thing..." There are nutrition studies on frozen veggies and some canned, no sugar added fruits that show them same as fresh. If you purchase what is in season at the supermarket it helps. Also, people don't need meat at every meal, and going meatless a couple times a week is healthy as well. I watch what people are purchasing, and sometimes makes me shake my head, but I don't say a word... If you cut out a LOT of junk food and bev's you can afford healthy foods. People always seem to have $$ for pop, smokes, beer, etc. Priorities. Smiley Happy

ITA...don't buy into the "too expensive" bit. Price per calorie, fast food is expensive!!!

We have satiation receptors in our stomach.....that's why drinking 32oz of water will make you fill full. Using those receptors, a 1,000 calories of bananas will stretch your stomach, quieting those satiation receptors for hours.

Same receptors, a 1,000 calories of an In-n-Out single burger & single fries will satisfy you for a bit, but not satiate you....and you'll begin to look for more food...not for hunger, but to stop those satiation receptors from talking to you!! And that mean more $$ and more importantly, more calories. To adequately stretch those satiation receptors, you would need to eat 2-3 happy meals...crazy a lot of calories & more $$. So that Dollar Meal sounds good @ first, but it's not realistic. Marketing 101.

Couple bags of greens ($6), 10lb bag of potatoes, $1 bag of beans & 'over-ripe' discounted fruit, you should be able to feed off of that for days & days for very little money. My McDougall site always has a how "low can you go" thread....some people can get down to $3-4/day...or lower per month!! Eating healthy is not se.xy like the quickie fast food...we need to slooooow down & feed our souls rather than satisfy a quick dietary urge.

ETA: that's why I'm a big proponent to low fat, whole foods, plant based diet. Animal products & processed foods are calorie expensive...as well as calorie dense...that means it takes a lot of calories to satiate you...costing you a lot of $$.

The problem is that people who are poor don't get enough fresh produce.

A pound of spaghetti and $1 for a large jar of sauce is a lot cheaper than salmon and a big salad for dinner.

So true and yet they continue to cut funding for food stamps.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.
