Well, here I am ..... and for the past 20 years I've been in SALES in LA ..... and in my car and driving all over the place.
Here's my advice ..... You must make peace with the commute.
If you can't find a good talk radio station, or a favorite music station, then there's books on tape .... or my personal favorite ...... comedy albums! I buy a bunch of slightly used comedy CDs every year on Ebay for an average of $4-7 each and they're worth their weight in gold!!! I always arrive home in a great mood after listening to Jeff Foxworthy, George Carlin, etc etc etc.

I think the bluetooth option in my car is one of my favorite bells and whistles EVER! I catch up with friends and family members, as if they were sitting right next to me in the car. I won't use a bluetooth near my head- but via the radio, it's terrific!
I also grew up on LI and was accustomed to every trip taking 2x-3x as long as it should. NJ traffic has it's issues, but it' still better than NY!
A radio station or cd with your favoite music is also incredibly calming...

I live in the Seattle area and the traffic up has gotten horrendous in the past 20 years. I was standing on the curb in the dark everyday to catch a bus to work for years. Now that I don't work I do not drive any where in the early morning or betweem 3 pm and 7 pm. The freeways are parking lots. So many people have moved here and the roads have not kept up.

I live in a small town. I complain about traffic, but also know it's not real traffic. It's rare not to make it through a light.

We all wanted to economy to improve. We wanted everyone to be working -- well, now everyone is working and can afford a car = rush hour traffic. It is just how it goes.
In my small Florida town we get snowbirds starting the week after Christmas for 3 months. You can't get get parking space, seats in restaurants and there are lines everywhere. I've even been in line to drop stuff off at Goodwill. We have to get to church 1/2 hour before it starts to get a parking space and a seat. To go to the MAC machine and get money you will be in a line up of 8 to 10 cars all day long. HOWEVER - the snowbirds usually are home by dark or shortly after so I do banking , shopping at night, and if we want to go out to eat we go after 6PM, because they all go at 4PM to get the early bird specials.

I live in the Va/DC area. Some say our traffic is far worse than in LA.
You have no idea what bad traffic is until you come to Va and commute to DC (everyone does). It is crazy!
My friend retired just about 2 or so years ago (maybe 3). She is only 55, she got burnt out. She'd leave her house at around 4:30AM and if she was lucky I think she said it would take a little less than an hour. Much later and you were talking about longer than an hour.
It doesn't matter what time of day, there is always terrible traffic. The problem is many of the people who live here are transplants. We get a bad rap for our terrible driving but it's because so many people come from other places.
I think other's who have lived in this area will back me up on this. I'm not exaggerating! You have no idea.
I stopped working 42 years ago and never had to deal with it again.
As for how do we deal with it? Well, we who don't work make sure we stay away from the roads at times of day when it is crazier than other times. Try not to be on the major roads at lunch time (does anyone work anymore?)?
Around here people are always out on the roads! Because so many here are employed by the US government from Thanksgiving to January 2nd the stores and roads are totally filled. The government employees have use or lose leave so that's when they take it.

People in Albuquerque think the traffic is terrible. I lived in Houston over 30 years and I know terrible and Albuquerque isn't it. Since I'm retired, I'm usually able to avoid rush hour but occasionally it gets me. It's nothing compared to Houston's freeways.

I don't even know why people in Phoenix complain about "traffic". I drove rush hour in both Chicago and Los Angeles (a total of 35 years)......and THAT is really TRAFFIC.............

My wife says it is bad. How do I cope? Easy for me, I stay home.
