I hire someone to drive me to appointments when possible.

I can tell you that most people here live on audio books while they sit in their cars for hours each way. They all must have lifetime subscriptions to audible.
As someone living in the burbs of Atlanta, let me clarify a few things.
Crime is an issue. Just check on the stats of what happened to Lenox Square Mall when the train station opened. It's not paranoia if it's true.
The proposed line going out to my county would be nearly 20 miles away from my house and with some of the worst traffic, too. It's also in the opposite direction.
For public transportation to work, it has to take you where you need to be in a decent time frame. Even when I went downtown daily, public transportation added nearly an hour to my commute each day. Not kidding.
Now why would I vote to spend tax money that won't benefit most of my county and takes longer to get me where I need to go?

Waiting for someone from LA to weigh in 😜😜

@Laura14 wrote:@MaggieMack The tiny little system they do have is the cleanest nicest one I've ever been on. I guess if I need a little spending money I could always ride the rails up and down the one route and knock over a few homes since that's what Marta riders do apparently. It's so ridiculous.
Areas near the train stations have higher crime rates.
If you note the shape of the train line, it's fine if that's where you need to go. If not, it's like a friend of mine in DeKalb County who had to walk 30 minutes to the bus stop, take the bus to the train, and that doesn't include the waiting. When it's in the 90s in the shade, it's unbearable.

The major problem here is during "season", that is tourist season. We stay away from places we like such as Sanibel Island because the traffic is so bad and parking is almost impossible.

We are on the outskirts of Silicon Valley, where traffic there and anywhere in the Bay Area is horrible. It is the same as LA. I live 32 miles from my Doctor. It takes and hour to 1.5 hours one way in traffic. You learn the short cuts, but then after a while so does everyone else...short cuts are Not a secret, LOL!
When we drive to LA, I stress more. The drivers there are more in a coma, and many are just brutal, and not friendly. They have some very aggressive drivers. In the Bay Area and Silicon Valley traffic is piled up, 6 or 8 lanes back to back but somehow they seem kinder. JMHO. I think because LA is just different. it is a country of its own within a state, lol! I am not saying eveyone is like that on the freeways there, but many are.
We plan everything we do around traffic. We know leaving 5 minutes too early or too late can make all the difference.

Traffic is bad everywhere, I think.
The worst for me is construction traffic. I usually just try to remain calm and put myself into a traffic trance. LOL

Public transportation!

Exactly. I lived in Marietta and worked at Hartsfield International.

The traffic in my area has increased dramatically in the 21 years I've been here.
There have to be at least 7 Amish buggies an hour that go by, and let's not even talk about the wagons full of hay or firewood, sometimes 10 a day in harvest season, that run through here!
But seriously, we live on a township road and when we first moved here, we'd go hours and not see a car. Not so much now. As more people move to the 'country' they bring lots of cars. And even the Amish traffic has increased, as they are buying up every piece of available land in this area.
The nearest city where we shop and work isn't big enough to have real traffic problems. The worst we get is sitting through the same traffic light twice during Christmans shopping season in the shopping district.
I can live with that.
