When I went to the mall to get 4 -$50.00 gift cards this year for Christmas for my son and 3 grandchildren (in addition to their other gifts), the mall charged me $1.00 a gift card. (Not the end of the world but I thought it odd being last year there was no charge). This was an older woman who waited on DH and I at the courtesy desk and I recognized her from last year.

Then when she handed them to me she said the gift recipient has till Sept 2013 to use the gift cards (I got them early so that would be roughly 11 months from purchase?) or there will be a $6.00 fee TO the user for using them late.

I thought are you kidding me, you got the money what the heck? It would be different if you dont pay up front but of course you do so they dont lose anything if people dont use them on time or anything? But I went ahead and got them because the girls especially like to shop for some things on their own. AND SO I informed my DD that the girls must use them by Sept and I told my son (who does procrastinate on the cards but will use it for sure), not to misplace them and to use them fast.

Finally- My DD JUST informed me she told 2 friends of hers that work in retail, and they said thats highway robbery AND illegal and I should report the mall to the state attorney or consumer affairs or something?

I dont know that I will..lol.. but I was wondering, is it illegal? (in PA)
