Just because it's "mandatory" doesn't mean that I have to use it!

They can't mandate that!

That is rather childish. Better to accidentally back over a child who suddenly walks into your path, eh?

My car is a 2002 so no bells and whistles but still has automatic windows, automatic locks - the basics which I like. My husband's car is a 2014 with more gadgets and every once in a while he gets a low tire warning on his dash (especially during the change of seasons). One time it was the tire warning system itself that had to be fixed. I know it is a safety feature but I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.

@itsmagic  OMG don't get me started!  When I got my new car with this "safety feature", it took three, count them, three trips to the dealership to finally get one of those devices that actually worked and stopped going off every month.  And I work full time so that was incredibly inconvenient and costly since I don't get paid if I'm not clocked in.

I almost, almost donned the ninja outfit and stole my old car back.

Seriously, I love that feature.  Properly maintaining your tire pressure, particularly during changes in the season, is very important.  Proper tire pressure extent the life of the tire, improve gas mileage and allows for better handling.  Anyone who has ever had a slow leak in a tire will tell you how valuable that feature is.

@CrazyDaisy - I really like the tire pressure feature, too. My car told me to get it checked and it turned out I had a big nail stuck in the tire. Without that alert I'd have ended up somewhere on the side of the road with a flat.

I did have to go back after getting the tire replaced because they forgot to reset the system so the car kept telling me to get the pressure checked!!! I was freaking out thinking I'd run over another nail...

A back up camera allows you to see a small child on a bike or a pet that you might not be able to see.  It's a tool.  It doesn't replace anything.  But you knew that...

@bri20 -

And my backup camera helps me when those monster-sized vehicles magically appear on either side of my car while I am in stores I can't see through them or around them but the backup camera gives me the help I need to get out of the parking space safely.

In total agreement with you.  I even asked the salesman that question and he laughed and said the base model was the way to go.  Even it has more than I wanted.

To hear some people talk, there is a sudden rash of kids just popping up behind vehicles.

If I think that anybody might be behind me, I tap my horn.

You know, kinda like those back up beeps on commercial trucks?

Re: Is it even possible to buy a car today without all the bells and whistles?

When we were looking for a car for our son, he went on line and he built a Toyota that he wanted without the bells and whistles.  Trying to locate one was another story.

Back up sensors are a blessing but getting used to the beeping took us a long time to get used to with our SUV.
