Re: Is everyone going to Iceland

[ Edited ]

We were there about ten years ago and loved it. I would like to go back.

p.s. I should have said that it is incredibly beautiful, the horseback riding was great, loved shopping and checking out the food, although, as in, say, Sweden, some of it was a little gamey for me, but I wanted to try it. It was very relaxed, very friendly.

Re: Is everyone going to Iceland

I spent three days in Iceland.  The geology is impressive.  The earth reminded me of "the land time forgot".  Looking out into the horizon, there is steam rising from inside the ground.  There is an active volcano that spits out boulders which are strewn along the countryside.  They warn you to watch where you step as there are great fissures which go down into the magma. They use geo-thermal.  People heat their homes by drilling a well! There are geysers.

The scenery contains few large trees as they were all forested by the Vikings. They are trying to replant.

The waterfall I saw was breathtaking and massive. It was not commercialized as they are here.  It was a raw, mind blowing experience to walk to the edge and feel its power.

I consider the "Blue Lagoon" the eighth wonder of the world.  It is an outdoor spa.  The huge pool of water, the size of a small pond, is part of a thermo-energy plant.  The bottom is white silica which makes the water a beautiful turquoise. Everyone slaps this white "mud" on themselves and just enjoys "hanging out".     The water is a constant temperature (90 degrees?).  It made for one of the most relaxing experiences I have had.

There are horseback trekking tours that are true adventures.  They love their Viking horses.

The nation is under 400,000 people.  Most of them are under 40.  My impression was they love fashion and a good party.  They are warm, well educated, artistic and expressive.  They speak Icelandic, Swedish and English.  I had no problems communicating.

I will go back.

I'd love to go to Norway, they have an amazing view of the Northern Lights, and so many incredible waterfalls!  It's an amazing place. I've had a good friend from there who would tell me stories of her homeland.  Incredible history.

@Noel7- I went to Scandinavia 2 years ago...Norway, Sweden and Denmark....I loved all three but Norway was beautiful....the trip included a cruise through the Fjords, visiting the ice caps what's left....a Norwegian gentleman asked me what I like best in his Country....he was surprised when I said the clean air, fresh fish and the fabulous drinking water...it was so clear and cold; I only drink Voss bottled water and it may be psychological but it tastes so much better than other bottled water....all three countries were so clean and the people seemed so strong, vibrant and healthy.  They were also having a rare heatwave when I was there in October....it was still somewhat cool for a heatwave but they were swimming....

@Stray

I have been to Scandinavia several times and loved it each time. I especially love western Norway. There is no way to describe the beauty of the place, is there?

Re: Is everyone going to Iceland

I've only flown into Rekjavik (sp?) a few times.  Icelandic is a really nice airline.

The films (on the tourism channel on the plane)  make it look very inviting for people who like to hike and see mineral springs and such.  In the winter, the Icelanders can swim because of so many naturally hot mineral pools.  That is so weird and cool.  All the Icelanders are beautiful, too.

I am more of a "look at paintings and go to the opera" type of tourist, yet Iceland is still on my bucket list, as I llike the quirky sense of humor they seem to have.

I believe that Iceland is a prime location and destination for viewing the Northern Lights.  The story said that Northern Lights will not appear within the next ten years or so due to global warming and Iceland is a reasonable, now trendy place to go.

Re: Is everyone going to Iceland

I think people are looking for relatively safe locations to visit. Friends just returned from Portugal. They used to go to France but fears of terrorism led them to explore other places. Years ago, when flying home from Europe, we passed over Iceland. There was not a cloud in the sky and we saw all the volcanic terrain. It was stunning. I put Iceland on my bucket list after that trip.
