@Shorty2U, I also like the Macy's parade! No one watching football this year here ! PS, I don't think you are a grouch! 🦃

Nothing against it, but I've never thought it was a big deal... Granted, it used to be at least a tad more 'festive' when there was lots of family around, but even then, it was more or less just a presursor to Christmas... Each to their own, but I've never understood those who proclaim it their 'favorite' holiday... It's good to be thankful everyday.

I enjoy Thanksgiving and all of the family coming in to spend time together and enjoy a feast of food too.  It's just a very good time for me.  I'm very thankful for my life.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I can’t say Thanksgiving does much for me.

Growing up we never celebrated the holiday on Thursday, because the men in my family were in the woods somewhere deer hunting.   My dad always took vacation time to hunt all week, so our meal was on Sunday.

After my dad became disabled, my mom tried once more to have the family holiday meal on Thursday.   By then my husband and brothers were the hunters, plus one brother and I were working at the hospital, so we rarely had a Thanksgiving with everyone there.   Mom even tried cooking 2 turkey dinners to accommodate work schedules, but eventually went back to cooking on Sunday after the holiday.

By the time my girls were in high school, they joined my brothers in the woods.  At this point I was cooking a holiday meal because my family wanted to eat at home, and have leftovers.   I would have our meal ready by 1:00, so the girls could eat between the time they came in from their early morning hunt, before they went back to the woods after 3:00.  It was a challenge because I was still working 11-7, so I had worked Wednesday night and still had to go in that night, plus work Friday and Saturday.

Our Thanksgiving holidays got more “normal” after 2003 when I changed departments.   My daughters are older with different priorities now, and we are more apt to actually eat as a family at the dining room table on the holiday.

We all have our things we enjoy and things we don't.  No harm, no foul.

I just tend to reject this 'I feel sorry for you' type of thing.

There is a difference between being sorry that someone doesn't like or find joy in something (as in, it has to be hard, when society pushes the whole thing, and you don't participate or enjoy it.), and feeling sorry for someone.

The first is empathy, the second is sympathy.

I think the poster was more about empathy than sympathy.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

Thank you for the replies. It is interesting to read them all and your takes on Thanksgiving. I can see both sides for liking and not liking it now that I read all the replies.

I can relate to people who think of loves ones who passed away more so at the holidays. I have trouble dealing Mothers day and Fathers day. (My mom died young, so I always got sad on Mothers Day. And my dad died over 6 years ago so now i get sad on Fathers Day). So I can relate to people that lost someone around the holidays and miss them more during those times.

On a fun note, I love the Greek food idea and the pizza on Thanksgiving. I love both of those!

Lastly I love Christmas the most but to be honest, this year I see my husbands point of view on Christmas. We really over spend. He always says Christmas is hard on the budget, and I used to joke and say hes scrooge. But this year I see what he means with the costs of gifts.

i absolutely love thanksgiving and this time of the year all the way through mid january.

i am NOT surprised by the number of people who say they dont care for thanksgiving at all. there have been numerous threads where this has been evident, including this one. exactly why i didnt fully understand some who insisted that the day of thanksgiving be a time off for everyone. evidently people who dont enjoy the day still go out and do what they like......eating out, movies, shopping, football games, and watching holiday themed programming.

I love the holidays too Sunshine as I love the Christmas lights, etc.  I just don't like that the stores are now putting Christmas lights up Nov. 1 or even earlier.  It gets earlier every year.  (Some stores had Halloween decorations and Christmas decorations available at the same time, ugggh).

I also enjoy the time off as I usually take 2 weeks off towards the end of the year.  I just am not into Thanksgiving as much as I used to due to what I stated in an earlier post.  I think if you have children, it makes a difference--especially children that live close or travel.  To me,  Thanksgiving is another day--with perhaps a dinner at a family gathering that often isn't too big.    Have a great one !

I"m not into Thanksgiving either.  My mother died 3.5 years ago, and though I wasn't super close to her, she always made it nice.  Now, many of my siblings live out of town, and we have no children.  I'll probably go to one of my sisters for dinner.  It's just another day.  Yes, can't wait till Friday, LOL.

I think it's very important to some of my friends with children.

Hi @winamac1!  I don't mind Thanksgiving so much.  My husband's brother always hosts and his wife always makes it fun.  We aren't just family, we are friends.

That being said, I recently told one of my best friends I wish I could wake up on January 1st!  I have decided to host an "Orphans Party" this year for those of us who have lost our parents (all of us at a relatively early age) and don't have children.

I hope you can find some joy in getting together with family and reflect on your many blessings to give thanks! ❤❤❤

@magicmoodzHi magic.  Happy Thanksgiving a day early.  I don't dislike Thanksgiving, but I just don't love it, lol.  I am happy for the time off.  I have to leave for a week of training on Sunday so am not looking forward to 12 to 14 hour days.  But, I"m off for 3 days so that will be nice.  The Orphan's Party sounds fantastic.  I love that idea!!  I forgot that you don't have any children either.  My father is almost 89 (in April) so he's getting up there in age.  My mother, as you know, died about 3.5 years ago.  It certainly is different.  I have as of next week, only 2 siblings in town.  My brother is moving to Dallas and my other sister is 2 hours away.  Life sure changes as we get older, lol.  Anyway, great to hear from you!  Have a wonderful holiday!  Smiley Happy. Hugs

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I am fortunate enough to have wonderful memories of the holidays. I want my children and grandchildren to have that, too.  I want them to look back and remember the games and how we laughed and had fun.  I want them to remember the good food and good times and know it was all done out of love for them.  One day they will hopefully look back and say,  "Remember Grandma's apple cake" and "Big Bird", or even "remember when Grandpa did that or said such and such when playing that crazy game" .......things like this that live on and are passed on.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I really don't like any holiday unless it is one that causes no disruption to my life.  We go out to eat Thanksgiving when you pay twice as much for the food and then everything is closed so you go straight home.  Every holiday mainly Christmas and Thanksgiving seems to make the ones of us who have no family feel so lonely and unloved.  Even when I was young it seemed my job load increased so much at work to accomodate all the Christmas stuff plus the financial burden.  Also when young I would stand for hours and hours washing dishes on Thanksgiving and waiting on company.  I could not wait for them to go home and I could do my thing.  As an adult when I cooked and had family and friends over I was ready to drop at the end of the day.  When people say they love the holidays I just don't get it.
