Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I love Thanksgiving.  It's my favorite holiday.  I don't have any kids, it's just DH and I.  Over the years our family has really dwindled because many of those we spent holidays with in the past have died.

But I think Thanksgiving is so much more relaxed and laid back.  There are no presents to buy or worry about, no holiday decor to speak of.  It's just family and friends gathering.  Because it's a long weekend for many, the night can last longer because no one has to go to work Friday either.  With Christmas or even New Years day, all of us have to work the next day.

We still have kept some traditions in my family even though there are so few of us.  The night before Thanksgiving, we gather at the hostess' house and do all the prep we can.  We order pizza, have some drinks, prep and just have a great time.  Then we are back together again the next day.I can hardly wait.

What a great tradition @Lipstickdiva!  Prep night sounds like more fun than Turkey Day!😀

I"m not into Thanksgiving either.  My mother died 3.5 years ago, and though I wasn't super close to her, she always made it nice.  Now, many of my siblings live out of town, and we have no children.  I'll probably go to one of my sisters for dinner.  It's just another day.  Yes, can't wait till Friday, LOL.

I think it's very important to some of my friends with children.

Hi @winamac1!  I don't mind Thanksgiving so much.  My husband's brother always hosts and his wife always makes it fun.  We aren't just family, we are friends.

That being said, I recently told one of my best friends I wish I could wake up on January 1st!  I have decided to host an "Orphans Party" this year for those of us who have lost our parents (all of us at a relatively early age) and don't have children.

I hope you can find some joy in getting together with family and reflect on your many blessings to give thanks! ❤❤❤

I’m probably the reverse of many in this thread. Family “warm & fuzzy” holidays usually celebrated with extended family have been stressful and unhappy for almost my entire life. This time of year through Xmas has always been a “just get through it” lonely time for me. But I’m now with family who truly is a happy, warm, celebratory family unit, and I totally enjoy myself at both Thanksgiving and Xmas.

No one in the family gives a fig for football; they will be watching NASCAR reruns, lol. We ARE thankful for each other daily, and/but enjoy the holiday as an extra reminder, as we do Xmas.

As to the “politicization” of the holiday re the Indians - I think most people outgrow, or are out-educated via HS, college and the media - the myth of The First Thanksgiving, which is pretty much a media creation.

Starting in the 60s, Americans have been educated to realize that historically, the treatment of Native Americans was wrong - and in some cases continues to be wrong.  We know, we’re aware. But 99% of us living today have nothing to do with that and have no need to feel a personal shame.

JMO. I could post several analogies but won’t, because this was just meant to be my passing opinion and my own feelings and I have no desire to derail the thread or turn it to political debate (nor does the OP).

I appreciate Thanksgiving for what it’s about at its core - a simple day of thanksgiving for all that we have.

Yet there’s still no need to hate the holiday as a holiday. All of us have ups and downs from year to year. I’ve had many unhappy holidays, but I don’t literally hate the holidays themselves, I understand that the experiences and issues are my own, not everyone’s.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I have never been a big fan of Thanksgiving either. I am a vegetarian, so no turkey for me. I am also a "lifelong dieter"...was an overweight child and still struggle with food and self-esteem issues...so the over-indulgence during the holidays causes alot of stress for me. Sad but true.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I'm also not into any holidays.  I still have my parents, but as an only child, with no other family I'm close to, I'm pretty sure when the day comes and they have passed, I will not observe holidays in a traditional sense.

I like to put out a few decorations, relevant to the holiday, and I enjoy my Christmas tree and the ornaments I've collected over the years.  As for the rest of it, I find it stressful.  I guess I feel left out becasue I don't have a big family that gets together.

But this is my life, and I'm prefectly content to snuggle with my cats on the couch, watch some interesting TV and eat whatever my mood dictates.  I mostly enjoy the time off from work.

Even so, I wish you all a Happy ThanksgivingHeart

What a lovely heartwarming message. I have tears in my eyes.

I read your former posts to be sure I would not say anything insensitive if you don't enjoy the holidays.  How fun to read you have a granddaughter with a grandson on the way! I can't imagine a greater blessing.

Wishing you and yours a very happy holiday!

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I live alone now, and my children and grands live too far for us to be together.  But I still love Thanksgiving ( and Christmas).  I’ll have dinner with a couple of siblings.....but if that wasn’t possible I would still go to morning Mass, watch a bit of the Macy’s parade, fix a special meal, use my good dishes, and enjoy the evening with a glass of wine and good movies.

I have precious  memories of holidays past....and I cherish and am grateful for them.  That doesn’t stop me from celebrating, albeit differently, in the present.  Nothing stays the same....so I have made the choice to celebrate in whatever “present” I find myself.
