Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving itself is fine - family, food, and football. No matter how much you plan for it, it always seems to be chaotic though at some point and  you just really want to go outside and scream! Or maybe that is just me ....

Must say though, I cringe at the thought of kitchen cleanup that day - for that one day more dishes, pots, pans, silverware, and glasses are used!! Wouldn’t it be nice to just throw it all in the trash and just start over with something new and clean the next day? Oh, I definitely say “yes” to that one!

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I'm not, really, in the sense that I make my own traditions.  I spend the day as I wish (and for that I am grateful) - sometimes some of us have to work, but that's part of the deal in certain lines of work.

This year, we don't have to work and I am making a glorious chicken stroganoff, since we have a free day.  🍽

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

Had a very dysfunctional family growing up and didn't care much for Thanksgiving - or Christmas (at least as much as it involved the family.)

Now I have  a wonderful family and very much enjoy the preparations and celebrations of both holidays.  Understand how they can be hurtful, but am just so thankful that I can finally enjoy them.

Blessings to all - and hope those with family issues can find some peace and joy in spite of those issues.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I think every day is a day to be thankful!

When are we going to wake up and realize not to live in the past? (Those with unhappy holiday memories.) And I have some. My father was an alcoholic, and every holiday, you just never knew what was going to happen.

But now is now, and I cherish the time I can spend with my husband and my only daughter and her family!

I am truly thankful to the Lord and all His blessings!

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

The main reason I'm not into Thanksgiving is the food, none of my favorites but I love that we're all together as a family and feel blessed to have them in my life.  We're invited to our neighbors so I don't have to cook, yeah!!!! I'm more into Christmas since I make all my favorites.  I had a wonderful childhood growing up but I still think its more important to concentrate on the "here & now" making today special.  I miss my parents very much be honor them by living the best life I can.

t-day is my very favorite holiday of all! Love the food and of course the family and friends. Not a fan of Xmas tho---especially when it seems to last for 3 months----get tired of the tons of commercials and silly programming and hype.

Nothing against it, but I've never thought it was a big deal... Granted, it used to be at least a tad more 'festive' when there was lots of family around, but even then, it was more or less just a presursor to Christmas... Each to their own, but I've never understood those who proclaim it their 'favorite' holiday... It's good to be thankful everyday.

I'm not sure why anyone would think that just because Thanksgiving is someone's favorite holiday, they aren't thankful everyday.

Just like I wouldn't presume that those who consider it a precursor to Christmas and don't really think it's a big deal aren't thankful at all.  Or that those who prefere Christmas and declare that their favorite holiday are materialistic and are only into the gifts and not the true meaning of Christmas.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I can't say Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday either. I guess I'm just not a big "holiday" person. I certainly appreciate the meaning behind the holiday though. I just don't care for all the fuss and hoopla. Traditional Thanksgiving food is not my favorite food either.

Most people I know forget the real meaning of the holiday and just think of it as a day off work and a day to eat as much as they can and watch football. I would rather just spend a quiet day at home with my immediate family, watch the holiday parade, and prepare a pleasant meal that doesn't take three days to prepare!

Around here, a lot of men don't even spend Thanksgiving with their family, because it coincides with deer hunting season. Many men just go off deer hunting. Whatever makes you happy, I guess.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

I lost my enthusiasm for Thanksgiving long ago. As a child, I remember being dragged from one set of relatives to another and being admonished if I didn’t eat a lot of food that I didn’t like. I also remember the women and older girls doing ALL of the work while the men just sat around and watched football and thinking that was a giant load of baloney.

Re: Is anyone "not" into Thanksgiving?

American Thanksgiving. Eat without guilt.

by Aaron Carroll, New York Times

“There’s probably no holiday more associated with food than Thanksgiving, and that’s one of the reasons why there’s probably no holiday that causes people as much stress. If you believe that eating right and avoiding foods that are bad for you are essential to health, then a huge feast isn’t something you look forward to.

“If that’s the case, you’re missing the point of Thanksgiving. It’s supposed to be different. That’s what makes it special. That’s what makes it a holiday.

“Your health doesn’t depend on what you eat this one day. It’s what you eat the other 364 days that counts. It’s what you do day in and day out, in terms of sustainable eating habits, that makes the difference. If you’re eating healthily the rest of the year, then nothing you do on this one day will make that much of a difference.

“Except, it might bring you joy.

“I can tell you what I’ll be doing; I’ll be having extra helpings of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and a couple pieces of pie. And whatever else my brother and his wife cook up for us this year. They’re really good at this, and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. You should, too.”
