Re: Is a life worth more in one part of the world versus another?

ABC News:

10,000 Syrian children killed in civil war, others raped, tortured and maimed: United Nations. More than 10,000 children have been killed in the Syrian civil war, the United Nations says, while many more are subjected to "unspeakable" suffering, including rape, torture and recruitment for combat.

I believe in equal replacement. No more than two children to replace you when you go. Each of my girls had two children, except one who had none. If the whole world followed that formula, we could be okay in several generations. However, that's never going to happen in third world countries because of all the things mentioned in post #46, where babies are the product of rape and torture. All of those countries are located in Africa. Sooner or later the entire world is going to have to confront the African issue if we want to survive.

Ford, it sounds like a plot to a movie. Will you write it? I know it is a serious issue. The way you wrote about it was very compelling.

We don't even need to leave the United States when you read the number of children taken for $3x trade.

"With 100,000 children estimated to be in the $3x trade in the United States each year, it is clear that the total number of human trafficking victims in the U.S. reaches into the hundreds of thousands when estimates of both adults and minors and $3x trafficking and labor trafficking are aggregated."

I totally agree with you. And will add those in our own country that need health care, AND our veterans who need a lot of help, as in dealing with PTSD, not losing their homes when they can't work, etc.

If the news (networks, print and online) gave as much time (day in and day out) and effort to the above mentioned issues as it does to other events... I believe we'd see a change. There would be worldwide protests growing in strength and support of stopping these atrocities.

Very good point, Sydney. It's another example of the comparative worth of certain individuals. The poor and most vulnerable populations are not reported on with the same tenacity.

It's soo blatant, especially with Hollywood. Take the move The Impossible which is about the 2004 tsunami. The original family the movie is based on are Hispanic, yet you have Naomi Watts running around Thailand. Very few Asian victims are portrayed as well........grrrr. Guess they think we don't take notice.

Re: Is a life worth more in one part of the world versus another?

There is an African man (in his 50s) who works at our local Wegmans. I have followed him over the last 3-4 years, as he has learned English, graduated from janitor to check out and now sometimes to product demos, his English is now that good.

He is missing one entire arm. He lost it running to escape from armed men on camels, who hacked it off with a machete. He was lucky to escape with his life...his wife and 3 of his 4 children died.

Wegmans has outfitted his checkout station with a carousel so he can load the plastic bags with one hand.

He is an inspiration to me. Every time I see him I am reminded of my great luck to have been born in the USA.
