Re: Is a life worth more in one part of the world versus another?

every day of my Lenten fast, when I feel very hungry, I think and pray for the children who are hungry all the time around the world---we are all equal to god's eyes

We should make the country safe for newborns before we start carping about other countries.

We should also do something about the murder rate using guns, and about gun control.

It could be just me, but I don't see wanting to help children in Syria as carping about other countries.

I'm also of the opinion that we can do more than one thing at the same time.

I agree. I think it's possible to care about more than issue at a time and about what goes on in more than one country at a time.

Unfortunately, there is plenty of misery in the United States and in the rest of the world to go around.

There are world views and there are cultural views. Sadly, when cultures don't value people in their own communities there's little the world can do about it. Controversial subject, I know. I trust we agree each life has equal value.

Here's a chart showing the US compared to several other developed countries including Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Japan, etc.

We have the highest infant mortality rate of all those included.

Re: Is a life worth more in one part of the world versus another?

There is no question we have work to do when it comes to infant mortality in the US. I would argue though that we do have factors that do contribute to our problem though. One is we share a border with a developing nation. There are few on that list who share this with us. We have people coming here from Mexico to have their children who have not had proper or any prenatal care at all. A lot of high infant mortality rates are located in the south. Between 2000-2009 immigrants contributed more to the growth of the suburban poor population than any other region of the US. In Washington DC 40% of the growth in the suburban poor was due to immigrants. Second, we have a large obesity rate and we also have the highest rate of unnecessary C-sections.

Also African Americans are twice as likely to die in their first year than whites are. There was a study done in NC that concluded that white women who did not finish high school had a lower infant mortality rate than black college graduates.

I am not arguing there isn't work to be done but we do have factors that make up that number that other countries don't experience to the extent we do.

I wouldn't say it's geographic, but if behavior is any indicator, some cultures surely seem more accepting of violence against people more than do others...

No, not every life has equal value.
A serial killer is not equal to a person who is protecting our country or community (Military / Fireman / Police)
A p3dophil3 is not equal to a teacher or professor
A person who kills or slaughters animals is not equal to a judge
A person who r@p3s and/or tortures people or animals is not equal to your every day good Samaritan.
So no, not every life is equal.

And hey, we have a big problem here in the USA......what about the lives in the mud slide in Washington. They are still looking for bodies there.

My heart was aching when CNN showed the interview with the man from Malaysia whose wife was an employee on 370.....their children are wondering when mommy will come home. How do you explain that one???? My heart went out to him on that one.

Every life is precious........

A little O/T but related...I read that one man was leaving to fly on that plane. He flew often for work. This time his children, ages 1 and 3, grabbed onto his legs and didn't want him to go. They'd never acted like that before when he was leaving for a trip.

I've read that we are born with psychic powers but lose them as we get older. I wonder if these little ones had some foreknowledge.

Was this the father that made sure his sons would get his wedding ring and his watch if anything happened to him? He also made sure to take lots of pictures of the family.

We know without knowing.

SNS...not in the story I read. May have been another passenger.
