I have a hard time believing that the more expensive pet food is any better for our pets. I had a female cat that lived to be 19 and the only thing I could ever get her to eat was 9 Lives Tuna. Explain that?

Nutrition is only one factor is a pets life.  I had a great uncle who drank frequently and smoked a pack a day, lived to be 93.  Long life is not always defined by just one thing.

So true! I had a Siamese cat I got as a young kitten many  years ago. He never had shots, never went to the vet, ate only cat chow his entire life.  He never had a sick day ever.....He lived to 20 years old!

Now, I was very young, did not know about nutrition, and was too broke to afford vet visits....the only reason he never went. But, he out lived  many other pets we had because I would assume good genetics.

I wish there was more out there for cats, especially info on recalls.

Hi Noel Smiley Happy here's a link with cat food recalls, and you can follow the AVMA on Twitter for recalls:

Great information. Thanks for posting this!

I buy Blue Wilderness dry food for my cats. I hadn't heard anything bad about Blue, so this makes me nervous. For the money I am paying for that stuff, it had BETTER be the absolute best. No guarantees anywhere, I guess. I would love to make my cats food, but they require the ingredient taurean which you cannot buy anywhere. The best I would be able to do is cook them food as a supplement to commercially prepared food with taurean.

I've been buying Rachel Ray's brand of cat food...the dry crunchies; don't know if she sells moist cat food too.

Re: Is There Any Such Thing As "Safe Pet Food"?

I asked this question recently of a profession breeder who is very holistic/organic oriented....a little weird actually.  She recommended Fromme brand.  I ordered a bag (33lbs) from Amazon.  I thought my dogs were going to assault me between the front door and the kitchen.  They liked what they smelled.  Even my picky eater dived into it.  My friend says they've never had a recall.

I don't think Precise Holistic dog foods have ever been recalled. Honest Kitchen was voluntarily recalled for a few formulas but otherwise than that, they have had an excellent safety rating.

There are very few brands left that haven't had some recalls at some point, although sometimes it is only voluntary. I appreciate when brands are pro-active and recall the products before harm is done.

I don't even trust the store bought treats.  There was a recent story (within the last month) about pet treats.

I go to a butcher and get big leg or knuckle bones.  They get them raw.  They sort of shave them with their teeth; no danger of splintering.  I never give raw hides or store-bought treats.  Just think, if your dog ingests salmonella or some other vile thing from Chinese-made krap, then licks you, you could get it too.

I used to do this too until we got a dental checkup and it revealed my dog had 3 (or was it 4??) cracked teeth due to chewing on these bones. My vet said she really doesn't like dogs chewing on these because they've seen so many cracked teeth as a result, especially if they are older dogs. I was shocked, as I always thought they were good for their teeth, helping them to keep them clean.

I too have switched to this brand.  I buy it at my local hardware store for a very reasonable price and no longer have to buy Hill Prescription Diet.

Re: Is There Any Such Thing As "Safe Pet Food"?

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but for great dog food reviews check out Dog Food Advisor (dot) com. They go really in depth about the brands and ingredients in them.

Unfortunately the FDA this summer has really amped up their protest against raw foods and many have been recalled in a short span of time. Seems like they do not like these small raw food companies taking market share against the grocery store ****** (so much for monopolies being illegal, sigh). Take these recalls with a grain of salt, especially for raw foods.

Personally my dog gets a blend of raw and kibble (raw for more flavor, kibble for crunch and cleaning teeth).
