A very close friend and her husband, both past minimum social security retirement age, were still working full time. She is a teacher in a parochial school with no retirement benefits, other than social security. Her husband was older, and a full-time truck driver. They both needed to work. He died from Covid-19, on their wedding anniversary in April, after being on a ventilator for three weeks. They married later than most, and still have two kids to support. Financially, she will need to continue to work, and supplement with private tutoring. She is the kindest person that I know, and would never think of judging anyone else.

@mom2four0418 That's so sad, how awful for your friend.

@CatsyCline wrote:@Jordan2 Mondays are the worst day to go grocery shopping. Most store sales start Fridays. Thats when the flyers show the sales for the week. The biggest shopping day after Saturday is Sunday. By Monday, the produce, bread, meat and dairy have been decimated.
On the actual topic of the thread-yes it is. Stores are busy on weekends.
I am having trouble with sugar free popsicles and a certain ice cream I love being out of stock where I shop. Because it's Summer, kids are out of school. And it always depends on the day I shop.

I normally go to Publix on Tuesdays and they always seem well-stocked. I stopped by Kroger today to pick up my favorite bread, their Signature Honey Oat bread, and the entire section of THEIR bread was empty. they had plenty of other breads, so I picked up a Pepperidge Farm oat bread. I don't know if it's a shortage of their bread, or if Mondays are a bad day to buy it.

So I guess do away with with them all, right?
Government was never supposed to be such a huge safety net and if people really understood where all this leads, people might think twice about signing up.
My question still remains, it's better to do away with them, right?

@Pook Are employers responsible for people's children?

@Porcelain wrote:Are you guys are saying that truck drivers are staying home and refusing to work? Why? I thought they were driving, fairly heroically, all through the pandemic and did not lose their jobs. I would think truck drivers would all still be on the job. What happened to reduce the number of truck drivers?
@Porcelain I don't believe anything happened to reduce the number of truck drivers. I think it's fictional reading.

Yes of course the narrative from some posters about people on unemployment always applies. My comment wasn't a narrative-it logically applies if you are opposed to government "handouts". Send it back to the govt.
@Greeneyedlady21 We should provide a structured safety net for people unable to work, for areas hit by natural disasters, and such but not enable people able to work to not do so.
People need help and deserve help. People like to not work and don't.

I went to Costco early this morning. No shortages that I noticed.

@On It wrote:In some states workers in grocery stores and other service industries are paid a good wage. In my state, they are not. These workers have to have more than one job to survive. No wonder they won't return to a minimum wage job or low wage job until they are out of options. I wouldn't either.
Corporations are all about the bottom line. They will not pay fair wages until they are forced to do so. Because of the worker shortage some in our area have increased their pay. Hopefully, others will follow.
@On It Just remember--corporations don't pay people; we pay them. So how much are you looking forward to paying in increased wages?
This costs everyone. When minimum wages increase your wage goes down. I'm not saying anything for or against, but we are going to see amazing increases in prices and interest rates in the very near future I believe.
I think those two things will far outpace any wage increases, social security benefit increases, or things like that. We'll just have less money to spend outside of necessities.
That goes both ways @Sooner . So if there is no product no money exchanges. If there is product money is exchanged. One can't do w/o the other. We can't stop eating and they can't stop providing a service, lest they go out of business. This common sense.
